The CIO leads cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, data governance, responsible AI governance, vendor oversight, and digital transformation for an approximately 150-employee nonprofit serving older adults, caregivers, community partners, and employees. This hands-on executive role advises leadership, sets technology strategy, manages vendors and budgets, and ensures timely resolution of equipment, software, network, security, and user-support issues.
Education Required:
Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, business administration with a technology concentration, public administration, or related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
Preferred:
Master's degree in information systems, cybersecurity, business administration, public administration, nonprofit management, or related discipline.
Experience:
Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible IT administration, systems management, cybersecurity, infrastructure, or technology operations experience, including at least five years in leadership. Experience in a comparable organization is required; nonprofit, aging services, healthcare, human services, government, or community-based service experience is strongly preferred. Experience leading cybersecurity, infrastructure, cloud services, business continuity, vendor management, budgeting, process improvement, AI governance, and organization-wide technology projects.
Professional Certifications Strongly preferred:
CISSP, CISM, CRISC, CGEIT, CISA, CCSP, PMP, ITIL, or comparable cloud, network, privacy, continuity, or vendor-management credential. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced computer proficiency and ability to evaluate, explain, and troubleshoot hardware, software, cloud, infrastructure, collaboration, and security technologies. Strong knowledge of cybersecurity governance, security operations, access management, network protection, incident response, backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and risk management. Ability to establish practical AI governance standards for acceptable use, privacy, security, transparency, bias awareness, human oversight, and vendor accountability. Proven strategic planning, project management, budgeting, vendor management, change management, communication, and service delivery skills. Work Environment and Other Requirements Ability to work on site as operational needs require and support office-based, hybrid, remote, and field employees. Availability outside normal business hours for significant outages, cybersecurity incidents, maintenance, and continuity events. Ability to travel locally, handle standard computer equipment with or without reasonable accommodation, and satisfy applicable employment, confidentiality, and background requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Collaboration Lead the IT Department by setting priorities, service expectations, roles, and accountability standards. Coach and evaluate technology staff while addressing training, coverage, and succession needs. Partner with executive, program, operations, finance, HR, grants, communications, and compliance leaders to deliver practical technology solutions. Establish governance for technology requests, infrastructure changes, data ownership, AI use, cybersecurity priorities, and investment decisions. Cybersecurity and Information Protection Develop and maintain an organization-wide cybersecurity program with policies, controls, incident response procedures, employee training, and executive reporting. Protect employee, participant, caregiver, provider, donor, financial, and organizational information through appropriate safeguards. Oversee identity and access management, endpoint protection, email and network security, vulnerability management, patching, encryption, backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity. Coordinate assessments, audits, incident investigations, remediation plans, and timely reporting to executive leadership. Information Technology Infrastructure and AI Governance Maintain secure, scalable, documented IT infrastructure, including networks, cloud platforms, devices, telecommunications, collaboration tools, and core systems. Set standards for reliability, lifecycle replacement, configuration management, asset tracking, documentation, and infrastructure resilience. Develop responsible AI governance practices covering acceptable use, privacy, security, accuracy, bias, accessibility, transparency, procurement, monitoring, and human oversight. Technology Strategy and Thought Leadership Advise the President/CEO, executive leadership, and board on technology strategy, cybersecurity, infrastructure investment, innovation, AI governance, and enterprise risk. Create and execute a multi-year technology roadmap that supports service delivery, productivity, modernization, and growth. Translate technical issues into clear business implications, options, costs, risks, and recommendations. Operational Efficiency and Service Delivery Improve workflows, reduce duplication, strengthen data quality, and automate routine work where appropriate and secure. Maintain service standards, ticketing, escalation, asset inventory, lifecycle plans, and performance measures for technology support. Ensure dependable onboarding, transfers, offboarding, account access, equipment readiness, and support for office-based, hybrid, remote, and field employees. Risk Management, Compliance, and Continuity Maintain a technology risk register and lead periodic assessments of cybersecurity, privacy, infrastructure, vendor, operational, AI, and continuity risks. Recommend risk priorities based on mission impact, likelihood, cost, compliance obligations, and organizational risk tolerance. Ensure tested backup, restoration, disaster recovery, continuity, audit response, corrective action, and evidence of control effectiveness. Technology Administration, Budget, and Vendor Management Oversee networks, cloud services, business applications, telecommunications, hardware, software licensing, collaboration platforms, data systems, and documentation. Manage the technology budget, capital priorities, contracts, licenses, purchasing, vendor performance, and total cost of ownership. Define vendor expectations for security, privacy, infrastructure performance, accessibility, support, continuity, and AI-related safeguards.
