Davidson, NC (CSC)BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY
The Manufacturing Research and Technology intern will work alongside engineering professionals on a 10-week applied research project developing augmented reality (AR) applications on open-source wearable hardware to support manufacturing operations. The intern will gain hands-on experience with embedded development, computer vision, and AI-assisted workflows while collaborating cross-functionally to translate technical prototypes into scalable field solutions. This role provides exposure to real-world manufacturing challenges, professional development through team and stakeholder interactions, and the opportunity to present findings to business leaders.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, execute, and complete special projects as assigned.
- Gains industry knowledge through daily business interactions and job assignments.
- Develop skills needed for career in industrial distribution.
- Supports assigned manager with business project work.
- Presents intern project results to business leaders.
- Perform independent research.
- Develop and test software applications on open-source AR wearable hardware using embedded SDKs and scripting environments.
- Apply computer vision, signal processing, or AI/ML techniques to solve manufacturing-related problems.
- Design and iterate hands-free user interfaces for shop floor and field environments.
- Prepare technical documentation including setup guides, architecture overviews, and developer notes to enable future development.
- Work cross-functionally with category management, marketing, sales, and supply chain teams.
- Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC's vision and unity of purpose.
- Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
What You Need:
- High School diploma required.
- Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Excellent academic record.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office software required.
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff and management is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills required.
Bonus Points If You Have:
- Coursework or project experience in one or more of the following: programming (Python, Lua, or similar), computer vision, signal processing, AR/VR development, or embedded systems preferred.
- Familiarity with software development tools (version control, IDEs, SDKs) preferred.
- Ability to quickly learn new hardware and software platforms preferred.
- Comfort working with physical hardware and prototyping in a lab or shop-floor environment preferred.
Other Requirements:
- A valid driver's license may be required.
- This position may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations Information ("ITAR") and/or Controlled Unclassified Information ("CUI") Compensation starting at $22/hr depending on candidate location and experience.
