POSITION SUMMARY
The Computer Programmer I reviews objectives and assignment details with higher level staff to ensure thorough understanding; uses judgement in selecting among authorized procedures and seeks assistance when guidelines are inadequate, significant deviations are proposed, or when unanticipated problems arise. Work is usually monitored in progress, and work may be reviewed upon completion for accuracy and compliance with standards. Initial assignments are designated to develop competence in applying established programming procedures to routine problems. Performs routine programming assignments that do not require skilled background experience but does require knowledge of established programming procedures and data processing requirements and work according to clearcut and complete specifications. Tests and corrects Warehouse Management Systems and/or Inventory Control programs and may work with those operators who are operating efficiency or to respond to changes in work processes and maintain records to document program development and revisions. Maintains and modifies routine programs, makes approved changes by amending program flow charts, developing detailed processing logic, and coding changes, tests and documents modifications and writes operator instructions, may write routine new programs using prescribed specifications, and may confer with personnel to clarify procedures, processing logic, etc. In addition, the Computer Programmer I may evaluate simple interrelationships in the immediate programming area conferred with user representatives to gain an understanding of the situation sufficiently to formulate the needed change and implement the change upon approval of the supervisor or higher-level staff.

Develop, document and revise system design procedures, test procedures, and quality standards. Provide staff and users with assistance solving computer related problems, such as malfunctions and program problems. Review and analyze computer printouts and performance indicators to locate code problems, and correct errors by correcting codes. Consult with management to ensure agreement on system principles. Confer with clients regarding the nature of the information processing or computation needs a computer program is to address. Read manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn how to develop programs that meet staff and user requirements. Coordinate and link the computer systems within an organization to increase compatibility and so information can be shared. Determine computer software or hardware needed to set up or alter system. Analyze information processing or computation needs and plan and design computer systems, using techniques such as structured analysis, data modeling and information engineering. Define the goals of the system and devise flow charts and diagrams describing logical operational steps of programs. Train staff and users to work with computer systems and programs. Recommend new equipment or software packages. Use objectoriented programming languages, as well as client and server applications development processes and multimedia and Internet technology. Prepare costbenefit and returnoninvestment analyses to aid in decisions on system implementation. Utilize the computer in the analysis and solution of business problems such as development of integrated production and inventory control and cost analysis systems. Specify inputs accessed by the system and plan the distribution and use of the results. Interview or survey workers, observe job performance or perform the job to determine what information is processed and how it is processed.
