Job Description

Postition Overview Texas Iron & Steel is seeking an experienced CAD Programmer to support our growing steel processing operations. This position will be responsible for creating, reviewing, modifying, and preparing 2D and 3D drawings and models for production using a variety of CNC steel processing equipment. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar 2D/3D CAD and modeling software , along with a strong understanding of steel processing and/or fabrication, structural steel, plate, tubing, beam, channel, and manufacturing processes. This is not strictly a drafting position. We are looking for someone who understands how to take customer drawings, models, sketches, and specifications and translate them into accurate, efficient, production-ready files and programs for the shop. Key Reponsibilities Review customer drawings, CAD files, PDFs, models, sketches, and specifications for completeness and manufacturability. Create and modify 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or comparable software. Convert customer drawings and models into production-ready files for CNC processing equipment. Develop part layouts, cut files, and machine programs based on material type, thickness, dimensions, and processing requirements. Create efficient nesting and material layouts to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap. Determine appropriate processing methods and machine routing based on part geometry and production requirements. Verify dimensions, tolerances, hole locations, cutouts, bevels, copes, slots, bends, and other required features prior to production. Work with DXF, DWG, STEP, and other common CAD/CAM file formats. Assist with converting or recreating customer drawings when usable CAD files are not available. Review drawings and programs for potential manufacturing issues before releasing jobs to production. Work closely with Sales, Estimating, Operations, and Machine Operators to resolve drawing or programming questions. Make drawing and programming revisions as required by customer or production changes. Maintain organized drawing, revision, and program files. Assist with estimating processing time, material requirements, scrap factors, and production methods when needed. Support continuous improvement efforts related to programming efficiency, material utilization, processing time, and machine productivity. Communicate with customers or sales personnel when drawings contain conflicting, incomplete, or unclear information.
Equipment & Processes Supported:
The CAD Programmer may develop drawings and/or programs for a variety of steel processing equipment and processes, including: Flat plate plasma cutting CNC plate processing, drilling, tapping, and machining Structural plasma processing Tube laser cutting Structural and production band saw cutting Press brake forming Structural drilling Plate, sheet, tubing, pipe, beams, channels, angles, and other structural shapes
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
One or more of the following is preferred: Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Design, or related field AutoCAD certification SolidWorks certification Technical or vocational certification in
CAD/CAM, CNC
programming, drafting, or manufacturing Equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience The successful candidate will be: Detail-oriented and highly accurate Mechanically inclined Comfortable working directly with production personnel Able to visualize parts and assemblies in both 2D and 3D Able to recognize when something on a drawing will not work as intended in production Focused on material utilization and minimizing scrap Capable of balancing accuracy with the speed required in a production environment Organized and able to manage multiple jobs simultaneously Willing to learn new machines, software, and processing technologies Why Texas Iron & Steel Texas Iron & Steel is continuing to expand our value-added steel processing capabilities. Our operation includes advanced CNC equipment for processing plate, structural shapes, tubing, pipe, and other steel products. This position will play an important role in connecting customer drawings, estimating, programming, and actual shop-floor production . We are looking for someone who wants to be more than a CAD operator and who can become a key part of improving how we quote, program, and manufacture processed steel products.
