Job Description

The Information Technology Specialist - Township position is responsible for the maintenance, support, and overall functionality of the Montgomery Township computer network and related technology services. Duties include providing technical assistance for hardware, software applications, personal computers, voice communication systems, and Township-issued mobile devices. The position works under the direct supervision of the IT Director to ensure efficient and reliable technology operations across the organization. The responsibilities, duties, and qualifications outlined herein are intended to describe the general nature of the role and are not intended to be an exhaustive list. Additional duties may be assigned, and existing responsibilities may be modified or removed, at the discretion of the Township.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the performance, reliability, and security of all Township computers, servers, and networking equipment
  • Configure, support, and maintain all Township software applications and systems
  • Create, manage, and maintain user accounts, access permissions, and passwords for Township personnel across all systems
  • Enforce network security protocols, including password complexity requirements and multi-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and testing of the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and disaster recovery procedures by performing daily checks and maintenance of infrastructure systems, including verifying regular system data backups
  • Serve as the Email System Administrator for the Township
  • Serve as the Phone System Administrator for the Township
  • Troubleshoot and resolve daily software and hardware issues; assist staff with identifying technical problems and preparing related reports
  • Set up, install, and configure hardware and software, including PCs, monitors, printers, scanners, and related equipment
  • Support Township-wide technology projects and cybersecurity awareness initiatives
  • Implement and follow standard operating procedures for daily operation of the Township's computer systems
  • Maintain the security of computer infrastructure and promptly report security breaches through the established chain of command
  • Identify and resolve connectivity and operational issues for all Township agencies connected to the LAN/WAN
  • Coordinate staff training on standard software applications, including the development of training materials, guidelines, and procedures
  • Maintain asset management system for tracking of IT related equipment and coordinate proper disposal of broken and aged equipment
  • Support website updates as needed
  • Assist with budget planning for information technology
  • Remain available for after-hours system emergencies and serve as a member of the Emergency Management Team
  • Provide technical support for multiple satellite facilities
Required Key Technical Skills and Knowledge:
  • Experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows OS, Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange and Intel-based PC hardware in a networked environment
  • Basic Knowledge of the theory and application of network management, network operating systems, network topology and connectivity, and the ability to troubleshoot software and hardware problems
  • Have, obtain, and maintain knowledge of the current practices in the areas of computer support, networking, business applications, Internet/Intranet operation, data communications, and telecommunications.
Desired Skills and Knowledge:
  • Experience in municipal information technology department
  • Knowledge of Local/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) technology and topology including, but not limited to, Microsoft Windows networking, Ethernet connectivity, and TCP/IP protocols.
  • Experience in VoIP
  • Knowledge in Public Safety Technology
  • 2 years of professional level experience in a support environment
Required Education, Certification, License:
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a closely related field (or equivalent specific training)
