Tech Unlimited is hiring a full-time Technology Specialist in New Ulm. The main purpose of this position is to diagnose, repair, set up, and support phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers for residential customers. Most work happens at the repair bench and customer counter, with occasional remote or in-home support. This is primarily a residential device-repair role to start with rather than a business network administration or MSP help-desk position. Responsibilities Phone and Tablet Repair Diagnose cracked or unresponsive screens, battery and charging problems, camera and speaker issues, button failures, software problems, and other common device concerns. Disassemble and reassemble devices carefully, replace approved parts within your training level, and follow established repair procedures. Inspect and document existing damage, test each device before and after service, and confirm that repaired functions work correctly. Install custom screen protection and help customers choose appropriate protection and accessories. Computer Repair and Setup Diagnose laptops and desktops that will not start, run slowly, overheat, display errors, lose connectivity, or have hardware or software failures. Replace common components such as storage drives, memory, batteries, keyboards, fans, and power-related parts when approved and appropriate. Complete tune-ups, malware removal, operating-system work, data transfers, backups, new-computer setups, software installation, and update troubleshooting using approved procedures. Help customers with printers, email, accounts, Wi-Fi, accessories, and other everyday home technology through in-store, remote, or occasional onsite service. Customer Service and Shop Workflow Listen to the customer, restate the problem, and explain the repair process in plain language without making the customer feel embarrassed. Complete accurate device intake, including contact information, serial number, accessories, visible condition, customer concerns, and photographs when appropriate. Create and maintain complete Syncro tickets with diagnostic findings, time, parts, approvals, customer communication, repairs completed, and final testing. Provide clear estimates and status updates. Obtain approval before billable repairs, parts orders, work outside the original scope, or changes that could affect customer data. Label and store customer equipment properly, keep the repair bench and tools organized, and assist with front-counter or store duties when needed. Protect customer information and stop for help before taking an action that could cause data loss, damage, unauthorized access, or unnecessary cost. Required Qualifications Hands-on experience repairing phones, tablets, computers, or other electronics, or strong mechanical and technical ability with a willingness to complete structured training. Working knowledge of Windows, iOS and iPadOS, and Android. Basic macOS familiarity is helpful. Ability to troubleshoot methodically, use small hand tools, handle delicate components, and follow detailed procedures. Clear customer communication, patience, reliability, and sound judgment when a repair is outside your current skill level. Ability to write useful ticket notes, manage several open jobs, and keep parts and customer devices organized. High school diploma or GED and the ability to pass a background check. Ability to perform detailed bench work and occasionally lift or carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Preferred Experience Professional phone, tablet, electronics, or computer repair experience. Phone screen and battery replacement, computer hardware repair, malware removal, data transfer, operating-system installation, or printer troubleshooting. Customer-facing retail or service experience and familiarity with a ticketing system such as Syncro. What Success Looks Like A successful Technology Specialist completes careful repairs, performs thorough testing, keeps customers informed, and leaves complete documentation for the rest of the team. You should know when to continue troubleshooting and when to stop and ask for help. Customers should understand what was repaired, what was not repaired, and what they should do next.
