Job Description

Description We are seeking a versatile IT Network Specialist to provide networking, telecommunications, field-audit, and customer-support services across a large environment. This position will support phone installations, voice and network troubleshooting, network-port activation, campus moves, construction projects, room and data-port audits, and technical documentation. This team supports a variety of tools across, including digital signage as well. This is not a network infrastructure admin. Managing the network hardware and software (Cisco route/switch, LAN/WAN) is a separate team's responsibility. The ideal candidate has strong foundational networking knowledge, understands how voice and data technologies work together, and is comfortable shifting between technical troubleshooting and hands-on field assignments. This is an on-site, field-based role requiring regular travel between offices, construction areas, and other facilities. Top Skills Required 1 Networking and Voice/Telephony Knowledge
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, network ports, switches, phones, and voice technology.
  • Ability to diagnose connectivity-related phone issues and communicate effectively with network and telecommunications teams.
  • Experience with RingCentral strongly preferred. The ability to learn basic platform programming is ok. 2 Blueprint, Field-Audit, and Documentation Experience
  • Ability to read blueprints, floor plans, and as-built drawings strongly preferred.
  • Experience validating physical spaces, room numbers, data ports, or infrastructure against technical documentation.
  • Ability to mark up plans electronically and accurately update supporting records. 3 Customer Service and Adaptability
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when supporting faculty, staff, departments, and technical partners.
  • Willingness to handle varied responsibilities ranging from troubleshooting to phone installation, audits, data entry, and patch-cable work.
  • Dependable, team-oriented approach with a willingness to learn and take ownership of assignments.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Install and support phones and related telecommunications equipment.
  • Troubleshoot voice, telephone, and connectivity issues.
  • Coordinate with Network Services and the Network Operations Center.
  • Facilitate network-port activation for moves, renovations, and new construction.
  • Install patch cables and complete related field tasks.
  • Conduct physical audits of classrooms, offices, suites, residence halls, and other spaces.
  • Compare physical room layouts and network ports with blueprints, maps, and as-built documentation.
  • Mark up plans electronically using an iPad or similar device.
  • Help maintain accurate room, circuit, and data-port records.
  • Perform data entry using internal systems and common productivity tools.
  • Support building openings, campus moves, renovation projects, and network-readiness activities.
  • Provide customer support and basic troubleshooting for digital signage.
  • Deliver a high level of service staff and other customers. Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior hands-on experience supporting networking, telecommunications, phones, or voice technologies.
  • Experience with RingCentral or another enterprise telephony platform.
  • Familiarity with network switches and port-activation processes.
  • Experience reading construction drawings, blueprints, or as-built documentation.
  • Experience conducting physical technology, facility, room, or network-port audits.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and general data entry.
  • Experience supporting a campus, manufacturing plant, hospital, corporate facility, or other large multi-building environment.
  • Ability to learn new technology, processes, buildings, and internal systems quickly.

Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Knoxville, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $31.25/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
