Job Description
General Description:
This is a skilled job. This position ensures that the Pamunkey Regional Jail's data systems operate at peak efficiency and effectiveness at all times. The Senior I.T. Technician is responsible for installing and maintaining computer hardware, software, and networks, training and consultation, and recommendations about future planning and development of resources.Organization :
The I.T. Technician reports to the System Engineer and supervises no staff.Essential Functions :
- Works with technical and functional aspects of the Jail Management System to ensure proper and effective daily operation;
- Apply systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications;
- Participate in the design, development, documentation, analysis, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs based on and related to user or system design specifications or related to machine operating systems;
- Perform maintenance and enhancements on data systems;
- Participate in training in the operation of the data systems, ensuring efficiency and continuity;
- Provides troubleshooting to all personnel regarding hardware and software problems and issues;
- Follows policies and procedures;
- Provide individual training and support on request;
- Provide recommendations about accessing information and support;
- Maintain current and accurate inventory of technology hardware, software and resources;
- Maintain log and/or list of required repairs and maintenance;
- Make recommendations about purchase of technology resources;
- Connect and set up hardware;
- Load all required software;
- Identify and prepare hardware for disposal when appropriate;
- Ensure hardware is stripped and secured before disposal;
- Perform other related duties as required during working hours;

Non-Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Must have ability to troubleshoot all systems, report findings and recommend remediation. Knowledge of computer systems as it relates to the jail management systems is preferred. Ability and skills to conduct training of jail management system as well as other systems related to the operation of the facility is required. Must have proficient knowledge in computer hardware and software programs, computer networks, installation, troubleshooting, viruses and security, E-mail and internet programs. Must have analytical and problem solving skills; decision making skills; time management skills. Must have the ability to operate personal computer. Excellent oral and written communications skills are required.Education, Experience and Training :
Must be twenty-one (21) years of age. Associates Degree in Information Technology or technical certification preferred; however, significant on-the-job or other training providing the required knowledge of data systems will be considered. Experience and training in Jail Management System or Law Enforcement Systems is preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and /or training sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be acceptable.- Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
- Twelve-month probationary period
- Work beyond normal work schedule on occasion
- Pre-employment Physical Examination /Audiometric Testing/Drug Test/Alcohol Screening/and repeated according to policy thereafter
- Must wear civilian uniform
- Must maintain phone for emergency contact
- May have minimal inmate contact
