This is a fully onsite role and a candidate willing to relocate for the duration of the assignment will be considered. Local candidates preferred. We can offer full benefits and PTO for this role. Initially slated as a 6 month contract. The Cloud Engineer Contractor supports the Cloud Platform team by executing lifecycle maintenance, upgrades, configuration changes, and operational tasks across AWS cloud platform technologies. The contractor works directly with Cloud Engineers and Senior Cloud Engineers to implement planned platform changes, validate platform health, and maintain supported technology versions. Immediate Work Priorities
- Update Amazon EKS and the related platform technology stack to the most recent supported versions across all environments. This includes identifying dependencies, sequencing upgrades, completing change management, validating platform functionality, and documenting results.
- Rebuild the AMI creation process to consistently produce hardened, patched, and validated images. The process must use approved base images and configurations, apply required security controls, run automated vulnerability and configuration checks, retain build evidence, and prevent images that fail required checks from being promoted for use.
- Lifecycle maintenance process improvements Primary ResponsibilitiesKubernetes and AWS Platform Maintenance
- Execute Amazon EKS cluster lifecycle activities, including version upgrades and scheduled maintenance tasks.
- Identify any technical dependencies and determine the order of operations for maintenance.
- Perform node group updates, AMI refreshes, and approved cluster configuration changes.
- Assist with deployment, validation, and testing of platform upgrades.
- Implement approved platform modernization changes.
- Troubleshoot assigned infrastructure issues and escalate complex problems to Cloud Engineers. Service Mesh and Ingress
- Execute lifecycle updates for Istio service mesh components.
- Execute lifecycle updates for Gloo Gateway and related ingress technologies.
- Validate service mesh, ingress, and networking functionality following upgrades.
- Assist with certificate rotations and related maintenance activities.
- Implement approved networking changes. Platform Tooling Maintenance
- Execute scheduled upgrades and maintenance for platform tools and services.
- Assist with lifecycle maintenance for Argo CD, Helm, Kubernetes add-ons, observability tooling, and platform integrations.
- Perform deployment validation and smoke testing after maintenance activities. Infrastructure as Code and Automation
- Implement infrastructure changes using established Infrastructure as Code patterns.
- Execute approved Terraform modifications and deployments.
- Follow established automation standards and deployment procedures.
- Update automation and configuration artifacts as directed by Cloud Engineers. Change Management and Scheduling
- Create and maintain change records for planned lifecycle, upgrade, and configuration work.
- Coordinate with affected stakeholders to identify recommended maintenance windows and scheduling constraints.
- Schedule changes within stakeholder-recommended windows and the Cloud Platform team's approved change windows.
- Document the implementation plan, validation steps, expected impact, monitoring approach, rollback plan, and required stakeholder communications.
- Communicate change timing and status before, during, and after execution, and escalate scheduling conflicts or material risk to Cloud Engineers. Operational Support
- Participate in assigned platform operational support activities.
- Investigate and resolve assigned incidents and break-fix requests.
- Assist with root cause analysis and remediation implementation.
- Support platform monitoring and alert response.
- Execute maintenance work during approved maintenance windows when required. Documentation
- Update technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
- Document upgrade procedures, validation results, maintenance activities, and configuration changes.
- Record implementation details and evidence required by the change management process. Required Qualifications
- Hands-on experience administering AWS services in a production environment.
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.
- Experience using Linux-based systems.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience troubleshooting cloud infrastructure issues.
- Understanding of CI/CD deployment practices.
- Ability to follow established technical procedures, change controls, and operational standards.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for coordinating maintenance with engineers and stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Istio and Gloo Gateway.
- Experience with Argo CD, Helm, and Kubernetes networking components.
- Experience with observability platforms such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Experience supporting production cloud platforms and executing scheduled maintenance windows.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate, Certified Kubernetes Administrator, or comparable practical experience. Expected Execution Standards
- Complete assigned lifecycle and maintenance tasks according to the approved scope and schedule.
- Use the required change management process for planned work.
- Schedule and execute changes within stakeholder-recommended and team-approved maintenance windows.
- Complete documented validation and monitoring steps after each change.
- Produce clear records of completed work, results, issues, and follow-up actions.
- Follow established engineering standards, operational procedures, and escalation paths.
- Collaborate with Cloud Engineers and Senior Cloud Engineers throughout planning and execution.
