Intern - Firmware Engineer (Spring 2027)

Itron is seeking a Firmware Engineer Intern to join our Product Development team in West Union, South Carolina, beginning in January 2027. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience supporting the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of embedded Linux firmware for Itron electric meters. You will work alongside firmware engineers, test engineers, and technicians on meaningful projects involving firmware and hardware debugging, test applications, automation, and test-data analysis, with potential exposure to AI-related engineering initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Support software and firmware development activities for products and solutions serving the Utilities & Energy industry, with a focus on quality, reliability, and customer success. Contribute to the full project lifecycle by assisting with requirements gathering, development planning, coding, code reviews, testing, and documentation. Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot firmware and software components under the guidance of experienced engineers. Participate in designing, implementing, and validating firmware solutions while applying sound engineering principles and best practices. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to deliver customer-centric, innovative solutions that align with team and company objectives. Support testing and validation activities, including executing test plans, analyzing results, and documenting findings. Identify problems, investigate root causes, and contribute to solutions in an accountable and agile manner. Participate in technical discussions, team meetings, and project reviews, including coordinating or leading meetings with support from a manager. Maintain clear technical documentation and communicate project status, risks, and recommendations effectively. Work collaboratively with team members to share knowledge, learn new technologies, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience:
Education Currently pursuing a related technical degree. Technical Qualifications Programming experience, including knowledge of object-oriented programming. Professional Qualifications Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated initiative, motivation, and curiosity. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
Pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science; Electrical Engineering will also be considered. Relevant academic or personal projects. Prior internship, co-op, research, or work experience. Exposure to embedded systems, testing, automation, or AI-related work.
Duration:
Must be available to work either part-time (approximately 25 hours per week) or full-time (40 hours per week), beginning in early January 2027. Must be available to work onsite at Itron's West Union, South Carolina, location.
