Data Engineer

Job Description

Efficiency. Innovation. Integrity. These are our 3 Pillars. At Curtin Maritime, these core values are the framework for safe performance and operational excellence; proof of these pillars is evident in our people and our fleet. For 25 years, Curtin Maritime has been an industry leader in quality maritime solutions. We are a dynamic Marine Construction and Marine Transportation company experiencing rapid growth. Our team provides customers with a complete suite of maritime solutions, allowing us the incredible opportunity to work on unique projects in some of the most amazing places on earth. The business operates on a portfolio of specialized systems covering operations, payroll, procurement, accounting, and CRM. Integrating these systems into a unified data layer is a strategic, ongoing initiative. About the Role The Data Engineer helps maintain and extend the integration platform that connects our core business systems, including HELM Connect, Dayforce, Procurify, QuickBooks Online, and Dynamics CRM. The platform is built on mainstream Microsoft data technologies and supports operations, payroll, procurement, finance, and reporting across the organization. This role reports to the Senior Data Engineer on day-to-day development as well as longer-term initiatives — including the continued evolution of the company's unified project data layer and the expansion of Power BI as the primary self-service analytics platform. This is a hands-on technical position suited to someone who enjoys solving real operational and financial business problems with clean, well-structured data engineering. Key Responsibilities Develop and maintain integration pipelines in Azure Data Factory that move and transform data between SaaS platforms and the company's data layer. Write, optimize, and maintain T-SQL code — stored procedures, views, functions, and triggers — supporting both integration logic and downstream reporting. Design and maintain normalized relational data models in Azure SQL Database and SQL Server. Build and maintain integrations with vendor REST APIs, including authentication, pagination, retry logic, and structured error handling. Support and extend SQL Server components used for real-time and complex-payload integration scenarios, including C# / CLR stored procedure modules. Partner with business analysts to expose curated data through Power BI, leveraging the existing SQL layer (views, functions, semantic models) in a sustainable client/server model. Monitor pipelines and integrations for reliability, performance, and data quality; investigate and resolve issues as they arise. Document data flows, data models, and integration interfaces. Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and small-team planning. Required Qualifications 3+ years of professional experience in a data engineering or database development role.
Advanced T-SQL skills:
complex queries, stored procedures, performance tuning, indexing strategies. Solid experience with Azure SQL Database and / or Microsoft SQL Server. Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, or an equivalent ETL / orchestration platform (SSIS, Informatica, Talend, Fivetran, etc.). Working knowledge of relational data modeling, including normalized OLTP design. Experience integrating with REST APIs and OData services, including OAuth 2.0 / API key authentication, pagination, and error handling. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into data structures. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience with C# / .NET, particularly in the context of SQL Server CLR assemblies. Experience developing Power BI datasets and reports against SQL Server / Azure SQL sources, including DirectQuery and composite models. Familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) for authentication and authorization. Exposure to industries with significant operational complexity — maritime, construction, energy, or logistics. Experience integrating with HR / payroll, ERP, or operations platforms such as Dayforce, QuickBooks Online, Procurify, HELM Connect, or Dynamics CRM. What You Will Work On Extending the company's project data model so operational, financial, and labor data can be reliably attributed to specific projects, vessels, and phases. Building new integrations as additional vendor systems are introduced. Supporting the company's transition to Power BI as the primary analytics platform. Improving monitoring, alerting, and documentation across the integration layer. Who You Will Work With You will work directly with the Senior Data Engineer on technical direction and day-to-day priorities, and partner closely with business analysts and stakeholders in accounting, payroll, operations, and project management. The team is small, the work has direct and visible impact on how the business runs, and there is meaningful room to grow. Curtin Maritime is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
