This position supports the work of Southern Company Nuclear Technology Solutions , which enables safe, secure, reliable, and compliant nuclear operations through enterprise technology and analytics solutions. The ideal candidate is a senior data science professional with 10-15 years of experience building production-grade analytical solutions, deploying machine learning models, and translating complex operational data into measurable business value. This role is especially well-suited for candidates with experience in energy, utilities, nuclear operations, or other highly regulated environments . Position Summary The Data Scientist 3 - Nuclear Operations is responsible for designing, validating, deploying, and supporting advanced analytics and machine learning solutions that improve: operational performance equipment reliability predictive maintenance capabilities economic outcomes data-driven decision-making This role bridges complex plant telemetry , industrial operational data , and advanced analytics through production-ready solutions delivered within the Microsoft Azure Databricks Lakehouse environment . Success in this role requires a strong commitment to: technical rigor documentation auditability transparency traceability regulatory compliance The selected candidate will work closely with engineering teams, IT teams, and analytics partners to develop governed, scalable, and maintainable analytical solutions in a highly controlled operating environment. Key Responsibilities Advanced Analytics & Machine Learning Develop, validate, deploy, and maintain advanced analytical models supporting nuclear operational use cases. Build statistical , machine learning , and time-series models focused on: anomaly detection predictive maintenance equipment reliability operational performance optimization Apply advanced modeling techniques including: regression models ensemble methods anomaly detection methods forecasting models deep learning and neural network approaches where appropriate Continuously monitor model performance and support controlled model updates as plant conditions and data evolve. Ensure analytical outputs are explainable, reliable, and appropriate for operational decision support. Lakehouse & Cloud-Native Analytics Implementation Build end-to-end analytics workflows within the Databricks Lakehouse environment. Develop scalable analytics pipelines using Apache Spark and cloud-native processing technologies. Build and maintain feature datasets aligned with enterprise medallion architecture standards. Support repeatable experimentation, model tracking, and governed model lifecycle practices. Develop scalable data workflows capable of supporting large and complex operational datasets. Data Engineering & Data Integration Partner with data engineering and IT teams to integrate data from: operational systems telemetry systems enterprise databases data lakes structured analytical datasets Support feature engineering efforts to improve model performance and analytical value. Work with large-scale structured and time-series datasets to support advanced analytical use cases. Statistical Analysis & Validation Perform rigorous statistical validation of analytical methods, assumptions, and outputs. Design and evaluate analytical tests, experimentation frameworks, and A/B analyses where applicable.
Ensure models meet standards for:
explainability repeatability traceability operational suitability Data Governance, Security & Compliance Design solutions that comply with enterprise data governance standards. Ensure analytical outputs remain traceable to approved source data. Operate within established platform security controls that govern data access, ingress, and egress. Ensure analytical work aligns with formal documentation, auditability, and regulatory expectations. Applied AI & Advanced Search Capabilities Support approved AI-enabled analytics and advanced search capabilities where appropriate. Assist with retrieval-based analytical techniques and AI-assisted analytical workflows. Ensure AI-enabled solutions remain transparent, verifiable, and aligned with enterprise governance standards. Technical Communication & Collaboration Partner closely with: nuclear engineers IT leaders platform teams operational stakeholders Translate operational questions into analytical approaches and measurable technical solutions. Participate in architecture reviews, technical design discussions, and solution planning. Clearly communicate analytical assumptions, limitations, findings, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences. Documentation & Standards Produce comprehensive documentation for analytical solutions, including: model intent assumptions validation methods limitations operational considerations Ensure all work aligns with formal quality standards, audit requirements, and change management practices. Support a strong nuclear safety culture through disciplined documentation and controlled analytical practices.
