Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmopsheric Research located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai'i. DUTIES:
Designs, develops, implements, and maintains reproducible data science workflows, automated analytical pipelines, and data products for scientific monitoring and assessment programs in the Protected Species Division. Uses division data streams and archived data to develop and maintain analytical reports, interactive dashboards, and other tools that facilitate access to scientific results and support open, transparent, and efficient data analysis and dissemination. Works collaboratively with scientists and statisticians to translate established analytical methods into standardized, documented, and reproducible workflows and products..
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Quantitative Ecology, Marine Science, Information Science, Engineering, or a closely related quantitative or computational field.
EXPERIENCE
Three to five (3-5) years of professional work experience in data science, data analytics, programming, or a related field, including designing, developing, implementing, and documenting reproducible analytical workflows and automated data processing pipelines for scientific applications. Demonstrated experience using modern data science tools and programming languages, including R, Git/GitHub, Posit, Quarto, and related technologies, to analyze, visualize, and disseminate scientific results. Experience working with large and complex scientific datasets, including geographic, time-series, acoustic, or other environmental data, and developing recurring reports, technical reports, interactive data products, dashboards, or other tools for communicating analytical results.
KNOWLEDGE
Proficiency in R and working knowledge of modern data science and software development practices, including version control, code organization, testing, documentation, and reproducible research. Working knowledge of relational database concepts and systems, such as Oracle, MySQL, or Microsoft Access. Knowledge of scientific data management practices, including metadata, data provenance, data integration, quality assurance, data accessibility, and long-term data stewardship. Familiarity using tools and approaches for developing and disseminating interactive scientific data products, including Shiny applications, Quarto dashboards, GitHub Pages, and similar technologies.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Ability to identify and resolve problems independently. Possess strong interpersonal skills to interact and communicate (verbally, in written form or electronically) respectfully and professionally with supervisors, co-workers and others at all times.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS

Familiarity with the data management needs and requirements of ocean-related research and marine protected species studies. Experience collaborating with scientists and statisticians to translate established analytical methods into standardized, automated, and reproducible workflows.
