A Day in the Life This role exists within Medtronic's enterprise level AI Center of Excellence. As part of a team which specializes in both data-driven (AI/ML) and mechanistic (FEA/CFD) modeling, you will be empowered to develop and implement predictive modeling techniques to enable our Human Digital Twin strategy. You will apply expertise in data-driven modeling and mechanistic modeling to various Medtronic therapies, solving challenges across the total product lifecycle. The AI COE Digital Twin group are responsible for developing Digital Twin tools on behalf of multiple operating units. These tools are used to support critical product development milestones and to enable OU-level digital twin strategies for future personalized medicine tools. Sr. Computational Scientist Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned. Responsible for the initiation, planning and execution of research projects which advance the use of AI/ML data driven modeling, mechanistic modeling (mechanical, thermal, electrophysiology, electrical or fluid flow) and hybrid scientific machine learning approaches (e.g. PINNs) across Medtronic's portfolios (Cardiovascular, Medical Surgical and Neuroscience). Apply state-of-the-art Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or Computer Vision techniques to generate predictive models from real-world and synthetic data. Grow existing knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories of computational modeling, with an emphasis on AL/ML techniques (70%) and mechanistic modeling (30%). Proactively create novel algorithms, scripting and software techniques to automate, simplify and accelerate execution of computational modeling workflows. Apply proficiency in scripting (e.g. python), machine learning tools (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow or Jax), cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS) or 3D simulation environments (e.g. Omniverse, Unity) to develop physics-grounded digital twin solutions. Research techniques to enable robust, fast and personalized simulation of complex interactions between medical devices and realistic anatomy, including patient specific workflows based on clinical imaging and diagnostic information. Develop techniques to combine the strengths of data driven modeling (AL/ML) with mechanistic models (FEA/CFD). May contribute to scientific literature and conferences. May participate in generation and development of patent applications. Requirements Requires a Bachelor's degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience. Nice to Have Experience with development and application of scientific machine learning applications. Familiarity and working knowledge of FEA and/or CFD methodologies and applications. Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related science or engineering discipline. Experience with development and application of generative AI techniques. Expertise with FEA and/or CFD methodologies and applications. Expertise in High Performance Computing systems and practices. Background in leveraging biological or medical datasets to create predictive models, particularly for medical device innovation or personalized medicine initiatives. Proficient in Python programming for scientific and engineering applications. Experience using image processing platforms (e.g. Mimics, 3Mensio, Simpleware, 3D Slicer). Proven ability to use scripting for workflow automation and democratization. Experience modeling human anatomy, physiology or pathological conditions. Familiarity with medical device design and/or medical device software development processes. Experience working within a regulated industry. For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required. Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$112,800.00 - $169,200.00 This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
