Job Description

Remote Contractor - Ability to travel to Norwalk, CT for on-site collaboration preferred (approximately 1 day/week) This is role is built around two core missions: 1) providing hands-on operational support for key data feeds, integrations, and database systems and 2) documenting how our proprietary business platform works — its screens, tables, reports, and underlying logic — so that developers, new hires, and AI agents can understand and work with our systems. You will be working directly with our lead development team on a proprietary platform supporting inventory, market data, pricing automation, and marketplace integrations. This requires someone who can quickly build credibility with senior technical staff, ask sharp questions, and be trusted to operate independently within a complex, business-critical environment. Over time, you will become one of the key people trusted to own our data systems operations end to end, while also translating deep business and system knowledge into actionable documentation, developer-ready specifications, and improvement projects. What You'll Be Doing Operational & Data Systems Support (Core Focus) Support data feeds and data integrations running as scheduled jobs across our core business systems, marketplaces, and vendor/provider sources. Independently diagnose root causes of failures and ensure all scheduled jobs run reliably and on time. Analyze new business requirements and architect new data models/structures, or modify existing ones, to accommodate these requirements — exercising sound technical judgment on complex, business-critical data. Develop within our proprietary database platform, working directly alongside our lead developer: Build automated or ad-hoc loads for assorted new data into the database Create new or edit existing screens for new workflows and processes Create new market (or other) export data feeds Document work done and create step-by-step instruction documents for staff when required. Partner with our sysadmin as a peer on infrastructure decisions affecting our systems. Collaborate closely with ERP specialists for implementation and/or support of new or existing data feeds to/from our ERP systems. Serve as a trusted point of escalation for day-to-day system issues raised via email and chat, driving problems through to successful resolution. Systems & Database Documentation (Core Focus) Learn our proprietary business platform directly from our lead developer and the development team, engaging as a technical peer capable of pressure-testing design decisions. Document individual screens one at a time — purpose, business function, fields, buttons/actions, related reports, and related screens. Document the backend logic behind each screen: stored procedures, dependencies, data flows, and how information moves between systems. Create developer-ready functional specifications that a new engineer or contractor could use to troubleshoot or modify the system. Partner directly with our lead developer to prioritize documentation of the most-used screens first, and independently flag legacy or unused areas for review. Structure documentation so it can be permissioned, updated incrementally, and consumed reliably by a future Copilot/AI agent. Ideal Backgrounds Systems Support with a proven track record owning scheduled jobs and troubleshooting complex data pipelines independently Technical Writer with substantial database or software documentation experience Technical Project Coordinator with hands-on development or database experience Database Analyst / Data Documentation Specialist Business Systems Analyst Data Integration / ETL Developer Database Developer with meaningful ERP integration experience You Might Be a Great Fit If You Have enough hands-on depth with a relational database (tables, stored procedures, reports) to hold your own in technical conversations with a senior developer, even if you're not a developer yourself. Love digging into how a system actually works, not just how a process is supposed to work on paper, and aren't intimidated by a decade of accumulated technical complexity. Ask sharp, informed questions and enjoy organizing complex, technical information into something readable. Can document both a database screen and a department procedure clearly and thoroughly. Are comfortable working with both senior technical staff (developers, IT) and non-technical staff (sales, warehouse), adapting your communication accordingly. Can take a rough explanation from an engineer and turn it into a structured, developer-ready document. Are trusted to own recurring technical operations independently — monitoring scheduled jobs, diagnosing failed data feeds, and resolving day-to-day system issues under real time pressure with minimal oversight. Bring enough seniority and judgment to work independently in a remote capacity, with occasional on-site collaboration in Norwalk, CT. Compensation Contract (Remote) Ability to travel to Norwalk, CT preferred for on-site collaboration approximately 1 day/week Hourly rate based on experience Career Opportunity For the right person, this role can evolve well beyond documentation and operational support and become a central position responsible for systems analysis, database/knowledge architecture, data operations, process improvement, project coordination, and AI-driven business transformation.
