Job Description

Senior SQL Server Database Administrator 6 month contract to hire Hybrid, onsite 1-2 days/week in Janesville, WI Brooksource is looking for a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator to help support and improve an established SQL Server environment across on-prem and Azure. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys being the go-to resource for database administration, troubleshooting, performance, and ongoing improvements. You'll work closely with development, data, infrastructure, and other technical teams to keep the environment running reliably while identifying opportunities to improve and modernize it. In the first 30 days, you'll focus on learning the environment, understanding the current SQL Server landscape, building relationships with the teams supporting it, and jumping into day-to-day troubleshooting and operational needs. Over the first 60 - 90 days, you'll take increasing ownership of the environment, identify areas of risk and opportunity, and help establish a practical path forward for improving performance, reliability, processes, and overall database operations. Day Responsibilities:
SQL Server Administration:
Administer and support SQL Server environments across production and non-production, including configuration, maintenance, upgrades, troubleshooting, and ongoing health of the environment.
Backup & Restore:
Manage database backup and recovery processes, including monthly restore testing to validate recoverability and identify potential issues before they become production problems.
Performance & Troubleshooting:
Monitor and troubleshoot database performance, including query performance, blocking, locks, indexing, and other issues impacting applications and users.
SSIS & Database Jobs:
Support and troubleshoot SSIS packages, SQL Server Agent jobs, and other database-related processes to ensure reliable data movement and processing.
Database Architecture & Improvement:
Help evaluate the existing database environment and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Azure & Cloud:
Support SQL Server environments in Azure and contribute to cloud initiatives as the organization continues to evolve its database environment. Experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance and/or migrating SQL Server from on-prem to Azure is a plus.
Collaboration:
Partner with development, data, infrastructure, and other technical teams to troubleshoot issues, support applications, and provide database expertise throughout development and production.
Documentation:
Build and maintain documentation, processes, and standards that help improve consistency and knowledge sharing across the environment.
Automation:
Identify opportunities to automate routine DBA activities and improve operational efficiency through scripting and other automation tools.
Minimum Qualifications:
Strong hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in a production environment Senior-level experience with SQL Server administration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning Experience with database backup, restore, and recovery Strong understanding of SQL Server performance, including blocking, locks, query performance, and indexing Hands-on experience supporting SSIS packages and SQL Server Agent jobs Experience troubleshooting complex database and application issues Experience working closely with development and/or data teams Ability to work independently, take ownership, and become a trusted database resource
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Azure SQL / Azure SQL Managed Instance Experience migrating SQL Server databases from on-prem to Azure Experience with SQL Server high availability technologies such as Always On Availability Groups or clustering Experience with PowerShell or other scripting/automation Experience with Terraform Experience with Azure DevOps / CI/CD pipelines Experience with SQL Server architecture and modernization Experience in a retail, distribution, manufacturing, or other enterprise environment About Us At Brooksource, relationships are the foundation of everything we do. $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
