Job Description
This full-time, exempt role is primarily remote and includes occasional travel to our annual or biennial staff retreat in Colorado. To be considered you must have valid authorization to work for a United States based organization as this is a W-2 position with federal, state, and local tax implications. Applicants must be regularly available for live collaboration during SEI's business hours (approximately 8:30am through 4:30pm Mountain Time, Denver, CO USA) . While some overlap with these hours is required, start and end times offer flexibility based on the employee's time zone. A Little About Us Somatic Experiencing® International (SEI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, the educational and humanitarian home for Somatic Experiencing. We exist to bring education and training to those who can help heal people with trauma, hope to those living with trauma, and awareness of trauma to related professional communities and the general public. We train healing and helping professionals in SE, and we mobilize them to volunteer, research, donate, and otherwise support our efforts to address the global crisis of unresolved trauma through access to SE. About Your Role The Director of Technology leads SEI's technology strategy and internal technology function. This hands-on, systems-oriented leader is accountable for technology governance, platform and product ownership, architecture oversight, prioritization, vendor and budget management, security, data stewardship, operational reliability, and team development. The role ensures that technology supports SEI's mission, revenue processes, staff effectiveness, student experience, accessibility, and long-term sustainability. The Director combines strategic leadership with enough technical depth to evaluate designs, guide complex decisions, troubleshoot high-impact issues, and translate business needs into maintainable systems. The Director builds a service model in which routine configuration, event operations, user support, testing, and documentation are delegated appropriately while novel, high-risk, cross-functional, or architecturally significant work receives director-level leadership. Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities Technology Operations, Data Governance, and Risk Management - 25% Identify high-volume manual processes that can be standardized, automated, or supported through repeatable data operations. Establish controls for validation, testing, duplicate prevention, reconciliation, exception handling, access, recovery, and change management for automated and bulk workflows. Establish data-governance practices addressing data quality, stewardship, reporting, retention, integrations, imports, remediation, and appropriate use. Oversee security, privacy, accessibility, identity and access management, permissions, backups, and incident escalation in partnership with the MSP, vendors, and leadership. Lead responses to high-impact issues affecting registration, revenue, payments, staff or student access, data integrity, security, or event delivery. Maintain and periodically test business-continuity, disaster-recovery, and critical-system response procedures. Product, Platform, and Architecture Leadership - 25% Provide product ownership and architecture oversight for Salesforce, Fonteva, Experience Cloud, Form Assembly, Microsoft 365/Entra, Zoom, payment systems, and connected business applications. Evaluate significant configurations, automations, integrations, data models, permissions, reporting, and user-facing changes for scalability, security, accessibility, supportability, and organizational fit. Ensure major platforms have accountable owners, backup coverage, documentation, support and escalation paths, renewal plans, and adoption strategies. Partner with the Business Systems Platform Administrator on platform improvements, release planning, troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and operational handoff. Determine whether technology work should be completed internally, assigned to a vendor, or managed as a formal development project. Technology Strategy, Governance, and Prioritization - 20% Develop and maintain SEI's technology roadmap, priorities, and multi-year capability plan in alignment with organizational strategy and available capacity. Establish clear intake, prioritization, authorization, release, documentation, and escalation practices for technology work. Lead decisions regarding platform investments, process design, vendor selection, automation, lifecycle planning, and emerging technology. Communicate technology risks, dependencies, costs, tradeoffs, capacity constraints, and recommendations to executive leadership. Define service ownership and decision-making authority across internal staff, the MSP, vendors, and requesting departments. Team Leadership, Service Delivery, and Organizational Continuity - 20% Manage and develop Technology team members through clear responsibilities, goals, regular feedback, protected learning time, and progressive responsibility. Establish a tiered support model distinguishing frontline guidance, internal platform support, MSP responsibility, and vendor or developer escalation. Establish and monitor service expectations and performance measures for system availability, support responsiveness, issue resolution, and customer satisfaction. Ensure staff receive timely communication, training, documentation, and change-management support when systems or processes change. Translate technical designs, limitations, risks, and tradeoffs into clear guidance for staff and leadership. Reduce single-person dependency through cross-training, documentation, backup coverage, succession planning, and sustainable operating practices. Vendor, Contract, and Budget Management - 10% Manage strategic vendor and MSP relationships, service quality, escalations, contracts, licensing, renewals, procurement, and technology spending. Evaluate vendor performance, platform fit, security and compliance considerations, cost, maintainability, and organizational value. Balance internal capability development with the cost-effective use of specialized external expertise. Maintain accurate records of technology decisions, risks, commitments, expenditures, and expected outcomes. Monitor compliance with contractual requirements, licensing terms, applicable policies, and technology-related legal or regulatory obligations. Assist with other duties as assigned Education Bachelor's degree in general IT, computer science, cybersecurity, software development, or business administration with an emphasis in IT or similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Salesforce, Fonteva, platform administration, business analysis, or project management certification is preferred. Type of Experience Needed to be Successful 1+ years of experience leading cross-functional projects, vendors, staff, budgets, or major platform initiatives is required. Prior experience may include serving as an informal platform owner or technology lead without holding a director title. 5+ years of experience in business systems, technology operations, CRM administration, technology leadership, or related work is preferred. Experience in a nonprofit, association, membership, education, training, or event-based organization is preferred. Specialized Skills Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to align organizational goals, business processes, data, technology, people, vendors, costs, and risks are required. Ability to translate business needs into scalable, secure, maintainable, testable, and supportable technology solutions is required. Strong judgment in technology-governance, architecture, prioritization, data quality, security, privacy, accessibility, operational controls, and change management is required. Working proficiency with Salesforce or a comparable CRM, including configuration, permissions, reporting, data structure, automation, integrations, production risk, and vendor recommendations, is required. Strong ability to communicate technical risks, limitations, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders is required. Working proficiency with Fonteva or a comparable event, membership, or managed-package platform is preferred.
