JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Technology advances the mission of Billings Catholic Schools by providing strategic and hands-on leadership for technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, instructional technology, data systems, and user support. As a member of the Administrative Leadership Team, the Director ensures that technology is secure, reliable, accessible, and aligned with BCS priorities while serving as a trusted partner to students, families, faculty, and staff.
PERFOMANCE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Mission and Strategic Leadership Serve on the Administrative Leadership Team and contribute to system-wide planning and continuous improvement. Develop and implement a multi-year technology plan aligned with BCS mission, educational goals, operational needs, and financial priorities. Advise the President, principals, and leadership team regarding technology opportunities, risks, investments, governance, and emerging trends Infrastructure and Operations
- Lead and provide hands-on oversight of networks, servers, wireless systems, firewalls, cloud platforms, telecommunications, applications, and end-user devices across all campuses.
- Maintain standards, procedures, documentation, inventories, configuration records, and lifecycle plans.
- Monitor performance and coordinate projects, procurement, deployment, maintenance, replacement, and responsible disposition of technology assets. Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Continuity
- Lead cybersecurity, data protection, identity and access management, and technology risk-management efforts.
- Maintain and test security safeguards, backup, disaster recovery, incident response, and business continuity plans.
- Support compliance with applicable legal, contractual, insurance, funding, privacy, records, and security requirements; coordinate incident response and corrective action.
- Provide or coordinate cybersecurity awareness and responsible-use training. Educational Technology and Data Systems
- Collaborate with instructional leaders and educators to support curriculum, instruction, assessment, accessibility, and student learning.
- Evaluate educational tools for mission alignment, instructional value, privacy, security, interoperability, usability, support needs, and total cost.
- Oversee the security, reliability, integration, and appropriate use of student, employee, operational, and financial data systems in partnership with system owners.
- Support effective reporting, analytics, data quality, records management, digital citizenship, and responsible use of emerging technologies. Service, Communication, and Professional Learning
- Foster a responsive, patient, professional, and relationship-centered support culture.
- Maintain efficient processes for requesting, prioritizing, resolving, escalating, and documenting technical assistance.
- Communicate clearly about outages, security concerns, system changes, maintenance, upgrades, and implementation plans.
- Provide or coordinate training that builds employee confidence and effective technology use. Budget, Vendors, Policy, and Improvement
- Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets, evaluating expenditures for mission impact, risk, sustainability, and total cost of ownership.
- Manage vendors, contracts, licensing, subscriptions, warranties, renewals, grants, partnerships, and cost-efficiency opportunities in accordance with BCS practices.
- Recommend and maintain technology policies, procedures, standards, acceptable-use expectations, and documentation needed for audits and institutional continuity.
Assess services through user feedback, support data, system performance, risk reviews, and strategic goals; maintain professional knowledge and perform other duties assigned by the President.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, information systems, computer science, cybersecurity, educational technology, or a related field, or equivalent preparation through education and progressively responsible experience.
- Significant experience supporting organizational infrastructure, networks, cloud services, security controls, data systems, and end-user environments.
- Experience leading technology projects or system implementations, with working knowledge of cybersecurity, privacy, backup and recovery, identity and access management, and risk management.
- Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, project-management, communication, service, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly, work independently, manage competing priorities, respond to urgent issues, and collaborate across multiple campuses. Preferred
- Master's degree or relevant professional certifications.
- Experience in education, nonprofit service, or another mission-driven organization.
- Experience with educational technology, enterprise cloud platforms, device management, data governance, cybersecurity frameworks, or multi-site operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in office, classroom, equipment, and campus environments, with travel between school sites and occasional work outside normal hours for maintenance, projects, outages, or security events.
- Ability to use computer equipment for extended periods and move throughout school facilities.
- Ability to inspect, connect, install, troubleshoot, lift, carry, position, or move technology equipment and supplies as needed.
- Visual and auditory ability sufficient to review system information, communicate with users, and safely perform essential functions.
