NIWC RDT&E
mission environments. In this role, the engineer will work closely with multiple stakeholders to maintain and enhance hybrid physical, virtual, and cloud-based architectures across development, test, and operational enclaves. The Automation Engineer ensures reliable, scalable, and secure system performance through comprehensive engineering support and proactive system analysis. The position is responsible for enterprise Windows Server deployment, configuration, and lifecycle sustainment across both classified and unclassified networks, leveraging Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and advanced PowerShell automation to streamline patching, improve consistency, and reduce manual overhead. The Automation Engineer brings hands-on technical expertise to ensure RDT&E environments remain stable, interoperable, and capable of supporting evolving research, development, and test activities. This role also supports multi-tenant lab infrastructures and mission-critical enterprise services while ensuring all systems comply with DoW cybersecurity requirements and maintain full operational continuity. This is an on-site position in North Charleston, SC.
Position Duties:
Create and deploy automated task sequences in PowerShell/WSUS, including Windows migrations, custom image deployments, and configuration management. Deploy third-party software using industry best practices or through third-party repositories integrated with WSUS. Integrate enterprise tools into WSUS managed environments, including data at rest (DAR), Windows Deployment Services (WDS), ManageEngine, Dell Command, and other related tools and services. Automate deployments and configuration using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (e.g., Ansible and/or Azure ARM templates) within change/configuration management processes Design, install, and configure required infrastructure components to support resilient hybrid-virtualized environments, including SAN/NAS storage, network architecture, and server platforms. Configure and administer Microsoft Azure virtual machines, session hosts, virtual networks, and storage to support Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments. Understand VMware vSphere and Hyper-V virtualization to execute assigned responsibilities (planning, tracking, troubleshooting, documentation, or compliance as applicable). Install, configure, and administer hybrid provisioning and analytics tools (e.g., VMware vRealize) to enhance performance visibility and automation. Perform installation, configuration, maintenance, and security hardening within classified and unclassified network environments. Implement, validate, and maintain all required STIGs and cybersecurity controls to achieve and sustain DoN accreditation and ATO compliance. Conduct technical planning, system hardware/software/network design, development, integration, verification and validation (V&V), and fielding activities. Provide technical support, administration, and monitoring of Microsoft Windows systems within physical and virtual environments. Review and prepare engineering and technical analyses, reports, change proposals, and other technical documentation. Collaborate with systems admin and helpdesk personnel in evaluating common issues and enhancing the effectiveness of troubleshooting and ticket resolution. Position Required:
Bachelor's degree in an Information Technology discipline (or additional 4 years of related experience) 10 years of progressive professional experience in IT Systems Engineering and Administration Demonstrated experience creating custom automation scripts (e.g. PowerShell, BASH) to support software installation, controls and hardening Demonstrated experience administering, securing, and troubleshooting Microsoft Enterprise Servers in both physical and virtualized environments Ability to design, maintain, and support secure Microsoft environments using Group Policy Management, WSUS deployment, scripting and automation Experience supporting Windows enterprise environments in classified and unclassified networks
Active Top Secret Clearance Salary:
