Senior Position Summary Buchanan Technologies is seeking a Senior Linux Administrator for a long-term, onsite contract-to-hire opportunity in the Dallas, TX area. This role will support a large-scale, distributed Point-of-Sale environment and will be responsible for maintaining Linux operating system images, managing patching activities, supporting production escalations, and working closely with technical teams and hardware vendors across multiple locations. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on Linux administration experience, preferably with SUSE Linux , along with advanced scripting skills and experience supporting highly available, distributed environments. Key Responsibilities Create, maintain, test, and support standardized Linux OS images used across Point-of-Sale locations. Manage Linux operating system patching, updates, and ongoing lifecycle maintenance for devices deployed in the field. Troubleshoot and resolve escalated Linux and POS-related production issues. Work with local and remote technical teams to diagnose and resolve hardware and software problems. Partner with hardware vendors to validate and troubleshoot JPOS device drivers for existing and future POS hardware. Support integration between Linux systems and Microsoft Active Directory environments. Develop and maintain scripts to improve administration, deployment, troubleshooting, and operational efficiency. Support automation initiatives using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or similar platforms. Document configurations, procedures, technical solutions, and operational standards. Participate in after-hours on-call support for priority and critical production issues. Collaborate with infrastructure, development, support, and vendor teams to maintain system stability and performance. Required Qualifications 5+ years of hands-on Linux operating system administration experience. Strong experience supporting enterprise Linux environments;
SUSE/SLES
experience is strongly preferred . 5+ years of scripting experience using technologies such as: Bash KSH Perl Python Strong Linux troubleshooting, patching, configuration, and system administration skills. Experience supporting production environments and resolving escalated technical issues. Ability to work independently and effectively in a senior-level operational support role. Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with technical teams, vendors, and geographically distributed support personnel. Ability to work onsite in Dallas, TX. Availability to participate in an after-hours on-call rotation. Preferred Qualifications 3+ years of experience with Samba and Winbind , particularly integrating Linux systems with Windows Active Directory. Experience with automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or similar platforms . Experience supporting Point-of-Sale, retail, kiosk, or other distributed endpoint environments. Familiarity with JPOS and POS hardware/device-driver integration. Experience working with hardware vendors and troubleshooting peripheral device compatibility. Jira and/or test case management experience.
