  • G Job Duties The Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Scientist in the Sample Support Services Group for the Commonwealth's Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS), which is one of the largest and most diverse consolidated state laboratories in the nation.
With an annual budget of over 30 million dollars and over 250 state employees, DCLS performs approximately 9 million tests annually. Results from these tests are used confidently by local, state, and federal public health, agriculture, food regulatory, environmental protection, and law enforcement officials serving to protect our citizens, food supply environment and commerce. DCLS is a member of several public health networks and emergency response groups; the Consolidated Laboratory also directs Commonwealth's environmental laboratory accreditation program. The Accessioning Scientist in Sample Support Services will perform pre-analytical functions related to accessioning as well as provide training within the group. The scientist will respond to inquiries from internal and external customers, resolve discrepancies, and reject samples. This position will also assist with maintaining documents to meet QA/QC policies and DCLS record retention policies. All DCLS safety rules and regulations must always be upheld. The Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) Sample Support Service's Group (SSS) receives a variety of specimens/samples from hospitals, health departments, Department of Environmental Quality regional offices, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer services, and Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water submitters across the Commonwealth. As an Accessioning Scientist , job duties include, but are not limited to: Performs pre-analytical functions related to accessioning and provides training Performs, monitors, and documents quality control (QC) procedures Responds to inquiries from customers, resolves problems and discrepancies; rejects samples that don't meet standards Maintains professional relationships and provides responsive support to internal and external customers Supports DCLS mission through effective teamwork Ensures a safe, secure, and compliant work environment
Minimum Requirements:
Knowledge of general laboratory terminology, procedures and basic mathematics Knowledge of laboratory safety practices for the handling of chemical, microbiological, infectious and toxic materials Experience with accessioning high volumes of clinical and/or environmental samples accurately Experience providing customer service by investigating issues and resolving problems for internal and external customers. Experience with laboratory information management system (LIMS) Ability to follow procedures, prioritize work and identify errors Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally Ability to lift and transport 30 pounds This position will be in Richmond, Virginia and must report on-site.
