LOCATION
North Central Office The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.
JOB GOAL
The goal of the TIS hardware/network technician is to provide timely troubleshooting, installation, and repair of network infrastructure and computers while minimizing downtime for staff. This role is committed to creating a secure, efficient, and responsive technology environment. The technician also aims to deliver strong customer service and proactive technical support across all campuses.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Installing and configuring network hardware, such as routers, switches, and access points. Managing data cabling and physical network infrastructure to ensure clean and effective setups. Monitoring network performance and analyzing metrics to prevent or resolve outages. Diagnosing and troubleshooting hardware and software issues in the network environment. Supporting employees with network connectivity problems and providing technical guidance. Collaborating with IT teams to upgrade and expand network infrastructure. Documenting network layouts, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures. Configure operating systems and software, using standard District and administrative packages. Repairs damaged devices and is responsible for the outbound repair process when needed. Installs, assembles, and configures computers, monitors, network infrastructure, and peripherals such as printers, scanners, and related hardware; installs cables or directs the rewiring of cables as required for new installations and office reconfiguration when necessary or as directed by supervisors. Troubleshoots problems with devices, including troubleshooting hardware and software, email, network, and peripheral equipment problems; makes repairs and corrections where required. Acts as a technical resource in assisting staff and students to resolve problems with equipment and data; communicates with the help desk to facilitate exchange of information and advice; implements solutions or notifies users as required. Assists in instructing staff and students in the use of standard district and administrative software when required. Instruct staff and students in the use and care of new and existing equipment. Determine the feasibility of repair of damaged or obsolete equipment and report it to the supervisors. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor, assistant director, director, or executive director.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of enterprise networking, including VLANs, quality of service (QoS), and wireless networking (802.11 standards). Proficiency in configuring and maintaining routers, switches, firewalls, and other network equipment. Hands-on experience with network hardware and tools such as cabling, testing equipment, and network monitoring software. A strong understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS). Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to assist non-technical users. Associate's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field. 1-2 years of experience as a network technician, IT specialist, or similar. Apple Technician Certification, highly desirable; A+ Certification, or equivalent experience (Mac and PC Experience highly desired) Deep familiarity with iOS, macOS and Windows highly desired Experience with Mosyle and/or JAMF Ability to demonstrate good customer service skills while interfacing with faculty, students, staff, and administrators. REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
(must currently hold all of the following): Network+, CCNA, or equivalent Security+, ISC2 CC, or equivalent
COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION
Maintains communication with district staff, as necessary. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form. Flexibility is required to work with others, work with data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.
