The Lead Application Engineer is the most senior and expert position in the series, a software engineering role responsible for the development, enhancement, and production support of Friedman's business applications, centered on Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O). While
D365 F&O
is the primary platform, the Lead holds technical ownership of the full Friedman's business application portfolio — including eCommerce (Sana Commerce), the Power BI / data platform, the Power Platform, and third-party and vendor-supplied applications that integrate with
D365 F&O.
This role owns architecture-level customizations and critical integrations, sets coding and documentation standards, and provides technical direction and mentorship across the Application Engineer team, serving as the primary escalation point for the most complex production incidents.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Own architecture-level
D365 F&O
customizations, interdepartmental system design, and critical cross-system integrations Diagnose and resolve the most complex production incidents — via code, configuration, or data fixes — through root cause analysis and corrective action; serve as the primary on-call escalation point Provide architecture and integration oversight across Friedman's broader application portfolio — eCommerce, Power BI / data platform, Power Platform, and third-party applications — ensuring consistent standards and integration patterns with
D365 F&O
Analyze and evaluate vendor-supplied software products; recommend new or replacement solutions Own the D365 release lifecycle, including deployment strategy, environment management, and Azure DevOps pipeline standards Set and continuously improve standards for coding, code review, documentation, change-control practices, support methodologies, and technical processes Ensure all customizations and developments adhere to security, compliance, and performance standards Develop automation to reduce manual/repetitive work Provide day-to-day technical direction and mentorship to Application Engineer I and II team members Drive cross-functional collaboration with business stakeholders, vendors and technology teams on complex technical requirements, projects, and incidents Respond to Technical Work Order requests; meet Team Response and individual Resolution SLA targets Lead standups with development partners and set technical priorities; collaborate with Microsoft Support and third-party implementation partners on complex technical issues Support scheduled off-hours work (e.g., code release deployments); respond to emergency after-hours pages per policy All other duties as assigned
Education/Experience :
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience 5+ years of enterprise application / ERP development experience, including 3+ years of hands-on
D365 F&O
development or architecture experience
Microsoft Certified:
Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate or Solution Architect Expert (preferred) A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required qualifications and skills will be considered A Valid Driver's License is required as an essential function of the job for occasional travel to Sonoma County & Mendocino County retail store and distribution center locations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Expert proficiency in X++, C#, and
D365 F&O
architecture, including extension models and performance tuning Ability to design cross-system architectures and critical integrations spanning ERP, eCommerce, and the data platform Demonstrated ownership of a release lifecycle, including environment strategy and Azure DevOps pipeline standards Ability to set and enforce coding, code review, documentation, and change-control standards across a team Working knowledge of security, compliance, and performance requirements applicable to ERP customizations Ability to evaluate vendor-supplied software and make build-versus-buy recommendations Experience running Agile delivery with internal and partner development teams — standups, backlog prioritization, and iteration planning Demonstrated mentorship and the ability to set technical direction for other engineers Strong communication skills — able to translate technical concepts into clear, business-friendly language Ability to remain composed and communicate clearly with stakeholders while managing production incidents under pressure
Work Environment & Physical Demands :
Work environment will be stationed at Headquarters, in Petaluma, CA Primarily sedentary, desk-based work involving extended periods of computer use Occasional travel to the Distribution Center or store locations to observe or validate production issues On-call participation may require responding to production issues outside standard business hours This role does not involve routine physical installation of hardware or on-site equipment repair What's in Friedman's toolbox for
