Cloud Solutions Engineer (Future Practice Lead)

REPORTS TO

Operations Manager

THIS IS AN IN-PERSON ROLE, 5 DAYS A WEEK, WITH TRAVEL TO WALLINGFORD, CT DAILY. THIS IS NOT A DEVELOPER JOB. JOB OVERVIEW

We are looking for a Cloud Solutions Engineer who is ready to get their hands dirty and help build a modern, scalable cloud services practice from the ground up. This role is ideal for someone who loves being in the trenches - deploying cloud infrastructure, scripting automation, solving performance issues - but ultimately wants to grow into a leadership role and take ownership of a high-performing cloud team. As a Cloud Solutions Engineer, you will design, implement, and support cloud environments (primarily Microsoft Azure, but potentially AWS or GCP based on client needs). You'll also help us standardize cloud architectures, document best practices, and lay the foundation for a scalable, profitable service line. This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to build something meaningful, own the early implementation wins, and grow into a strategic practice lead role over time.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Hands-On Execution (Phase 1 - The Doer) Design and deploy cloud infrastructure for clients on Azure and/or AWS. Migrate on-prem workloads to cloud environments, including servers, applications, and file services. Automate infrastructure provisioning using tools such as Terraform, Bicep, Azure ARM Templates, or CloudFormation. Configure and manage IaaS/PaaS services, virtual networks, storage accounts, firewalls, backups, and monitoring solutions. Implement security best practices, including identity management, conditional access, encryption, MFA, and logging. Optimize cloud environments for cost, performance, and availability. Assist in disaster recovery and business continuity planning using native cloud backup/recovery tools. Support issue resolution by collaborating with the service desk and infrastructure teams. Maintain accurate documentation of cloud environments, templates, and standard configurations. Strategic Development (Phase 2 - The Builder & Leader) Create standardized templates, deployment frameworks, and service delivery SOPs. Help define packaging and pricing for cloud services (migrations, optimization, monitoring, etc.). Guide internal adoption of cloud standards and mentor engineers on best practices. Contribute to pre-sales engineering, helping to scope and validate client cloud opportunities. Assist with vendor/tool evaluation and selection as we build a unified cloud toolset. Transition into a cloud team leadership role, managing future cloud engineers and owning practice KPIs.

3-5 years of hands-on experience in cloud infrastructure engineering, preferably in an MSP, IT services, or consulting environment. Understanding security principles, including IAM, conditional access, least privilege, and encryption. Track record of leading technical projects from deployment through post-implementation support.
