Job Description

Necromancer Labs is looking for a CNO Software Engineer to join our engineering team and help develop software supporting cyber operations, security research, and advanced network capabilities. We're looking for someone who enjoys working close to the operating system, understands how computers and networks actually work under the hood, and is comfortable solving problems where there may not be an existing library, framework, or Stack Overflow answer. This is an engineering-heavy role. You'll work on real systems, build tools from the ground up, reverse engineer unfamiliar technologies, and solve difficult technical problems across Linux, networking, embedded systems, and cybersecurity. What You'll Work On Develop software in C, C++, Go, Python Work with low-level Linux APIs, sockets, processes, filesystems, and networking Develop software for both standard Linux systems and embedded platforms Perform protocol analysis and reverse engineering Analyze binaries, firmware, and network services Develop and integrate security research prototypes into production-quality tooling Debug complex issues across applications, operating systems, networks, and architectures Cross-compile and port software to multiple CPU architectures and constrained environments Collaborate directly with engineers and security researchers throughout the entire development lifecycle What We're Looking For You do not need to check every box. Strong engineers who are curious and willing to learn are encouraged to apply. Strong software development fundamentals Experience with at least one systems-oriented language such as C, C++, Go Comfortable working in Linux Solid understanding of TCP/IP and computer networking Familiarity with sockets, processes, threads, IPC, and operating-system concepts Ability to read unfamiliar code and independently troubleshoot difficult technical problems Experience using debuggers and development tools such as GDB, strace, Wireshark, Git, and similar tooling Interest in cybersecurity, vulnerability research, reverse engineering, or low-level software development Bonus Experience Experience in any of the following is a plus: Reverse engineering with tools such as Ghidra, IDA Pro, or Binary Ninja Embedded Linux and firmware analysis ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, or other non-x86 architectures Cross-compilation and custom toolchains Network protocol development or analysis VPNs, tunneling, proxies, or overlay networking Binary exploitation or vulnerability research Linux internals Docker, Kubernetes, or distributed systems Government or DoD cybersecurity environments Existing U.S. security clearance What We Value At Necromancer Labs, we care more about technical ability, curiosity, and the ability to figure things out than collecting certifications. The ideal engineer is someone who sees an undocumented protocol, unfamiliar binary, strange piece of hardware, or difficult engineering problem and immediately wants to understand how it works. We operate with a small-team mentality where engineers have significant ownership over what they build and the technical decisions behind it. Why Necromancer Labs? You'll have the opportunity to work on technically challenging problems that go well beyond traditional enterprise software development. Our engineers work across software development, cybersecurity research, networking, embedded systems, reverse engineering, and infrastructure — often all within the same project. If you enjoy building things that require understanding systems from the application layer all the way down to the network and operating system, we'd like to hear from you.
