Position Summary:
The Imaging Scientist is responsible for conducting feasibility studies of potential machine vision applications and assisting in the design, development, and experimental evaluation of imaging components and systems. This role focuses on the development of machine vision technologies, including image processing algorithms, imaging optics, illumination systems, and overall vision system strategies. The Imaging Scientist works closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to research, develop, test, and optimize advanced imaging solutions that meet customer and business objectives.
Essential Function and Responsibilities:
- Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments for machine vision and imaging applications.
- Assist in the design, development, integration, and evaluation of imaging systems and components.
- Develop and implement machine vision algorithms for image acquisition, processing, analysis, and inspection applications.
- Design, evaluate, and optimize imaging optics, illumination systems, cameras, and related hardware.
- Perform experimental testing and validation of imaging components and machine vision systems.
- Analyze imaging performance data and provide recommendations for system improvements.
- Develop machine vision strategies and solutions to support product development and manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with engineering, software, and product development teams to ensure successful implementation of imaging technologies.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to image quality, optical performance, and system functionality.
- Document research findings, test results, technical specifications, and design recommendations.
- Stay current with advancements in machine vision, imaging science, optics, illumination technologies, and image processing techniques.
- Support prototype development and proof-of-concept evaluations for new imaging applications.
- Participate in customer discussions and technical presentations as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field preferred.
- Experience in machine vision system development, imaging science, optical engineering, or related fields.
- Experience with image processing, computer vision, or machine learning applications is preferred.
- Experience conducting experimental testing and data analysis.
- Knowledge of machine vision systems, cameras, sensors, optics, and illumination technologies.
- Experience with image processing and computer vision software tools such as OpenCV, MATLAB, Python, or similar platforms.
- Understanding of optical design principles and imaging system performance evaluation.
- Familiarity with machine vision hardware integration and industrial automation environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into effective imaging solutions.
- Experience with deep learning and artificial intelligence applications in machine vision.
- Knowledge of optical simulation and modeling tools.
- Experience with industrial inspection, robotics, or automated manufacturing systems.
- Project management and technical documentation experience.
Working Conditions:
- Combination of office, laboratory, and manufacturing environments.
- May require occasional travel to customer sites, vendors, or industry conferences.
- Ability to work with laboratory equipment, optical systems, and prototype development hardware.
