Company Overview Founded in 1997, Millennium International is an FAA and EASA approved Part 145 Repair Station specializing in the repair and support of new generation and legacy avionics systems and components. The company provides a wide range of services on glass cockpit (LCD & CRT) displays, TCAS, WX radar, Nav/Comm and more. Applicable markets include corporate operators, fleet operators, Part-135 charter operators, avionics brokers, military, rotor wing, commercial air transport segments and avionics OEMs. Our engineering team supports the repair station by developing innovative testing, repair, and troubleshooting capabilities. This includes automated and manual avionics test systems, modern replacements for obsolete parts and components, enhanced troubleshooting tools and processes, data analysis, and electrical, mechanical, and software reverse engineering and design. Position Summary The Embedded Systems Test Engineer - Avionics develops low-level diagnostic and functional test software for existing embedded processor platforms used in avionics systems. The role focuses on software that executes directly on target hardware to initialize, exercise, verify, and diagnose processor boards and their associated resources. Primary target architectures include Motorola/Freescale/NXP PowerPC and Intel x86 platforms, including legacy 486, Pentium II, and Mobile Pentium modules. This position requires strong embedded C/C++ skills and a practical understanding of processor architecture, memory, buses, interrupts, peripheral registers, and board-level hardware interaction. Assembly language is used where processor-specific operations cannot reasonably be implemented in C/C++. Experience with Honeywell PRIMUS EPIC or APEX hardware and Hardware Built-In Test (HBIT) is highly desirable. Key Responsibilities Design, implement, debug, document, and maintain embedded diagnostic and functional test software for PowerPC- and Intel x86-based hardware platforms. Analyze schematics, processor manuals, memory maps, interface specifications, component data sheets, and existing source code to determine appropriate hardware test methods. Develop low-level tests that exercise hardware directly rather than relying solely on higher-level operating system services. Develop and verify diagnostics for memory, FLASH, Ethernet, interrupt controllers, timers, watchdogs, processor and peripheral registers, memory-mapped I/O, communications interfaces, video controllers, discrete/digital I/O, board-level buses, and other platform resources. Develop memory diagnostics capable of identifying address, data, stuck-bit, coupling, and device-level failures; develop FLASH diagnostics for identification, addressing, integrity, and read/write/erase verification where permitted by the architecture. Develop Ethernet controller diagnostics that verify initialization, register access, transmit/receive operation, loopback functionality, interrupts, and interface status. Develop interrupt and watchdog diagnostics that verify generation, masking, prioritization, servicing, clearing, timeout behavior, reset behavior, and failure detection. Develop or modify startup, initialization, and processor-specific assembly routines needed to establish and control the hardware test environment. Debug hardware/software interactions using JTAG, hardware debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, Ethernet test equipment, and other laboratory instrumentation. Review existing hardware and software designs to determine how built-in-test capabilities can be reused, adapted, or incorporated across supported processor platforms. Document test algorithms, software interfaces, hardware dependencies, expected results, fault conditions, and diagnostic coverage; participate in design reviews, integration, troubleshooting, and formal verification activities. Required Qualifications Strong embedded C or C++ programming skills, with working knowledge of assembly language; PowerPC and/or Intel x86 assembly experience is preferred. Experience developing low-level software that directly interfaces with board-level hardware on PowerPC and/or Intel x86 processors. Strong understanding of processor architecture, including registers, memory addressing, memory-mapped I/O, interrupts and exceptions, timers, cache behavior, bus interfaces, and boot/initialization sequences. Ability to read electronic schematics, component data sheets, memory maps, and register definitions and translate them into functioning diagnostic software. Understanding of volatile and nonvolatile memory technologies, including RAM and FLASH. Experience with board-level diagnostics, Built-In Test (BIT), manufacturing test, acceptance test, or hardware verification software. Experience debugging embedded hardware/software interactions at the register and signal level. Ability to independently investigate unfamiliar hardware, determine how devices and interfaces operate, and define practical methods to verify them. Ability to work effectively with legacy systems where source code or documentation may be incomplete, inconsistent, or unavailable. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Honeywell PRIMUS EPIC or APEX avionics hardware and software. Detailed knowledge of Honeywell HBIT architecture, execution, fault reporting, and diagnostic philosophy. Experience with avionics PBIT, CBIT, IBIT, or HBIT implementations. Experience developing test software for avionics Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) or Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs). Experience with legacy Intel 486, Pentium II, or Mobile Pentium hardware and associated board-level diagnostic software. Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability embedded systems. Experience with Ethernet MAC/PHY diagnostics, JTAG-based debugging, FPGA/CPLD interfaces, and hardware/software integration. Technical Knowledge The successful candidate should be comfortable troubleshooting hardware from the software side and understand how software accesses and controls physical devices.
Relevant knowledge includes:
Processor address and data buses; memory decoding and chip selects RAM and FLASH organization; memory-mapped peripheral registers Interrupt generation, acknowledgment, priority, and masking Ethernet MAC/PHY operation and DMA Timers, watchdog circuits, reset circuitry, and boot sequencing
FPGA/CPLD
interfaces, discrete I/O, serial communications, and hardware status/control registers Development Environment Embedded C/C++ and PowerPC and/or Intel x86 assembly language Cross-compilers, linkers, linker command files, startup code, and boot code Hardware abstraction layers and existing legacy source code JTAG/debug interfaces and laboratory instrumentation Version control and configuration management systems Automated test equipment and external test applications Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline is preferred. Equivalent demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of a specific degree. Five or more years of embedded software development experience is preferred. Significant experience developing software that directly interfaces with board-level hardware is strongly preferred. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working with software source code and hardware design information. This engineer should be able to start with a processor manual, board schematic, memory map, component data sheets, and existing source code, then develop software that initializes, exercises, verifies, and diagnoses the hardware. This is not primarily an application software position. The work requires an engineer who understands system behavior at the machine and hardware level, including processor registers, memory transactions, interrupts, peripheral registers, hardware initialization, and fault conditions. Prior Honeywell PRIMUS EPIC/APEX and HBIT experience is particularly valuable.
