About the role We are hiring our first dedicated AI developer. The purpose of this role is not to run experiments or produce proposals, but to design, build, and maintain working systems that our teams rely on every day. The scope is intentionally broad. Wherever a manual process, bottleneck, or repetitive decision could be handled faster and more consistently through automation or applied AI, that falls within your remit. Some of these opportunities will be apparent immediately. Many of them you will identify yourself. This position is well suited to a developer earlier in their career who is capable of more than their résumé currently reflects. You will not be maintaining an existing codebase or working through a ticket queue. You will be given substantive problems, direct access to the people affected by them, and considerable latitude in determining how to solve them. Responsibilities Your core responsibility is to identify where AI and automation create meaningful leverage within the business, build those systems, deploy them to real users, and keep them running reliably. Initial priorities will center on our CRM and case management systems: automating intake and data entry, generating case summaries and first-draft correspondence, enabling natural-language search across our records, and improving the integrations between systems that were not designed to work together. These represent the clearest near-term opportunities we have identified. They are not the limit of the role. Depending on business needs and your particular strengths, the work may extend to: Document and data pipelines, including extraction, classification, and validation at volume Internal tools that make AI capabilities directly accessible to non-technical staff Reporting and analysis functions that currently require significant manual effort Client-facing automation, where accuracy standards and failure modes carry greater consequence Evaluation and monitoring infrastructure to detect degradation in model output Build-versus-buy assessments and vendor evaluation We will not be providing a fixed multi-year roadmap. We would prefer that you help build one. Qualifications We weigh demonstrated ability more heavily than credentials. A computer science degree is not required, and we welcome applications from bootcamp graduates, self-taught developers, and career changers. Required Strong proficiency in Python or a comparable language, with the ability to write, debug, and structure production code Working knowledge of APIs and system integration Competence with SQL and relational data Hands-on experience with LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic, including prompt design and handling non-deterministic output Sound judgment regarding when AI is the appropriate solution and when a simpler approach would serve better Preferred Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, or embeddings Familiarity with a major CRM platform (Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, Dynamics) or case management software Front-end development skills sufficient to build internal tools Experience with cloud deployment, containerization, or CI/CD Exposure to handling regulated or confidential data Attributes that matter as much as technical skill The ability to take an imprecisely defined problem from a non-technical colleague, ask the right clarifying questions, and deliver a working solution A bias toward deploying and iterating rather than extended pre-launch refinement Rigor in testing your own work before it reaches users The willingness to say when an approach is flawed, including when the approach is ours You should also be comfortable operating as the only person in the organization performing this function. You will encounter unfamiliar problems without a senior engineer to escalate to. Some developers find this environment energizing; others do not.
