Position Overview Spartan Digital is looking for a Web Design Contractor (approximately 10 hours per week) to support website builds, visual design updates, and ongoing maintenance for our clients. This role focuses on designing and improving website layouts, implementing visual elements, troubleshooting technical issues, and maintaining websites across platforms such as WordPress, HTML-based sites, Squarespace, and Wix. The ideal candidate has a passion for web design and development and enjoys solving problems independently. This role requires someone who can go beyond simply editing theme content. You should be comfortable customizing themes, overriding styles, and troubleshooting website issues to meet client needs. You will collaborate with our internal team to create visually polished, user-friendly websites while ensuring client sites remain functional, secure, and aligned with brand standards. Key Responsibilities Design visually appealing website layouts, sections, and pages based on project requirements Create and implement visual elements such as graphics, page structures, and UI components Update and maintain client websites across platforms such as WordPress, HTML sites, Squarespace, and Wix Customize and troubleshoot WordPress themes beyond their default capabilities to achieve desired design outcomes Write custom CSS to override theme limitations and achieve precise design results Troubleshoot website issues including plugin conflicts, update errors, security concerns, malware, and performance issues Ensure websites follow strong visual design principles including hierarchy, spacing, typography, and brand consistency Optimize page layouts for usability, responsiveness, and mobile performance Work independently to investigate and resolve technical issues affecting client websites Collaborate with designers, strategists, and account managers to execute website projects Communicate progress and timelines clearly with internal teams and occasionally with clients Ensure all work meets Spartan Digital's design, usability, and quality standards Requirements Passion for web design and development Strong visual design skills including layout, typography, color usage, and brand consistency In-depth working knowledge of WordPress, including themes, plugins, and the block editor Ability to customize and troubleshoot existing WordPress websites independently Ability to write custom CSS to override theme styles and achieve precise design outcomes Basic understanding of JavaScript and PHP (a plus) Strong understanding of responsive design and mobile-first development principles Ability to manipulate theme structure and layout to meet client design needs Experience working within brand guidelines and applying them consistently across website pages Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks or support requests Organized, reliable, and able to work independently in a remote team environment Preferred Skills (Nice to Have) Experience working with marketing or digital agencies Familiarity with Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Experience working with page builders such as Elementor, Divi, or similar tools Familiarity with hosting dashboards, DNS management, and website migrations Basic understanding of on-page SEO principles and how they relate to website structure Experience installing or managing header and footer scripts for tools such as Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, or Google Search Console Experience creating visual assets for websites such as icons, graphics, and layout components Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate technical issues independently Client Communication Comfortable speaking or corresponding with clients in a professional and friendly manner Able to explain website updates, issues, or design decisions clearly when needed

$20.00 - $25.00 per hour
