Job Description

Senior Backend Engineer Reports to:
Collin LeGault, Director Software Development Compensation:
$140,000-165,000 USD Base Salary, plus participation in the company's incentive compensation program. Full-time, Exempt General Purpose We're building the next generation of our monitoring platform, and you'd be one of the engineers writing it. The platform is a TypeScript and NestJS backend running in containers on Kubernetes (RKE2), with MongoDB and QuestDB behind it and an operator-facing web application in Next.js and React. Our monitoring devices in the field talk to the platform over MQTT, and the applications running on those devices are written in Go and Python on embedded Linux. You'd work on both sides of that line, with most of your time on the platform services. The work is ordinary in shape; APIs, data models, ingest, tests. Telemetry arrives from hardware in the field over networks that come and go, and operators act on what we do with it. You'll work alongside engineers who specialize across the whole range, from data acquisition on the devices to the operator interface. You won't be expected to be an expert in all of it, but you will be expected to be curious about the parts next to yours. Key Responsibilities Design and build backend services in TypeScript on NestJS.
Own features end to end:
data model, API, tests, and documentation. Work on telemetry ingest from our device fleet, and on making it reliable when networks and hardware aren't. Write and maintain the Go applications that run on our embedded Linux devices. Model and tune the data layer across document and time-series stores. Package and ship your own work: container builds, Helm charts, and our CI pipeline through to staging. Keep the platform diagnosable in production. Contribute to the web application as your interests and our priorities line up. Work in our Scrum process; two-week sprints, stakeholder demos, retrospectives. Qualifications Required 6+ years building and operating production backend services, with substantial recent TypeScript/Node experience.
Real API design instinct:
you've made the versioning, pagination, and error-contract decisions and lived with the consequences. Working proficiency in Go, or a track record of getting productive in a new language quickly. Most of your time will be in TypeScript, but the device applications are Go and you'll be writing them. Experience with message-based or event-driven systems, and an understanding of delivery guarantees and what breaks when they don't hold. Database experience across both relational and document models, including schema design and query performance work. Comfort in containers and
Kubernetes:
you can read a manifest, debug a failing pod, and reason about resource limits. You write tests as part of the work, not after it. Nice to have NestJS specifically, or another opinionated DI-based framework; the concepts transfer. MQTT, or another protocol used with constrained devices in the field. Time-series data at volume. Running Kubernetes on-prem or at the edge: RKE2, Rancher, k3s. React and Next.js. Embedded Linux, and build systems for it such as Buildroot or Yocto. Python for tooling and test harnesses. Certificate and PKI lifecycle work. A regulated, safety-adjacent, or field-serviced product domain. How We Work Two-week sprints, demos to stakeholders, and retrospectives that actually change things. A dedicated QA engineer on the team, whose testing complements rather than replaces the tests you write around your own work. CI does real work; lint, typecheck, a full test suite against live backing services, and automated deploys to dev and staging. Small enough that you'll own areas of the platform outright, propose tooling, and see your decisions reach production quickly. Work Environment This role is typically performed in an office setting, with occasional travel to attend events, meet with clients, or collaborate with other departments.
