Job Description

Position Title :
Temporary Out-of-School Time Program (OSTP)
Assistant Working Title :
Classroom Assistant Classification :
Temporary, full-time, hourly, non-exempt
Hours :
Expected schedule will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, 35 hours per week, with potential for expansion to school-year afterschool programming
Primary Role:
The Temporary OSTP Assistant will work in the OSTP Summer Enrichment Program with students in grades Pre-K-6th, in the Webutuck Central School District. The Summer Enrichment program runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm from July 6th to August 14th. The Assistant will work as part of a classroom team of two leaders to provide a high-quality combination of enrichment and academic activities which may include developmental support, milestone achievement, behavioral modelling, social-emotional learning, and other attributes according to the desired program outcomes for up to 20 students.
Responsibilities:
The OSTP Assistant will:
  • Follow a daily schedule that includes time for physical play, homework, snack, and learning activities
  • Assist with group activities as assigned by the Classroom Lead or Youth Programs Director including literacy activities, arts and crafts, games, and special projects
  • Lead group activities as assigned by the Classroom Lead
  • Mentor students and model positive and healthy lifestyle choices
  • Become familiar with and implement standard procedures and policies required by the Webutuck School District and as determined by funders, licensing agencies, and NECC
  • Supervise children at all times, including outdoors in appropriate weather, and enforce safety rules and behavior expectations
  • Help serve healthy snacks daily
  • Help children constructively solve conflicts that may arise
  • Communicate any concerns to supervisor
  • Model good judgement, positive behaviors and healthy lifestyle choices for children, parents, and others within the classroom
  • Demonstrate good judgement and positive attitude while engaging children in games and activities
  • Check in often with the lead teacher to ensure that the goals for each child are aligned and consistent
  • Communicate any concerns or challenges to supervisor
  • Share responsibilities for cleaning program spaces
  • Inform supervisor of supply needs for program
  • Assist in creating crafts for the children
  • Inform supervisor as soon as possible of lateness or absences
  • Maintain records as assigned
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly NECC staff meetings, and other meetings or trainings as assigned
  • Participate in at least 15 hours of professional development and training annually
  • Maintain regular attendance
  • All other duties as assigned

Motivated and comfortable working with young children Creative and imaginative in interactions with children Has a positive and friendly attitude when engaging with children Flexible and can problem solve quickly if a situation demands Reliable and punctual Has experience working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Utilizes proactive thinking and problem-solving skills. Can assist and occasionally plan age-appropriate educational and recreational activities Has good communication in person, writing, and via necessary technologies Can participate as an active team member, working well with supervisor, staff and participants Has the ability to maintain patient, professional demeanor when dealing with a diverse community of volunteers, parents, staff, and others Interested in learning new teaching skills and methods Follows all NECC Policies & Procedures Models NECC values at all times
Qualifications:
Required:
At least 1 year of experience working with young children High school diploma or equivalent Familiar with young children and their development stages Good communication in person, writing, and via basic technology, such as document sharing Background check through central database and fingerprinting Tested for TB with negative results
Preferred:
Spanish Speaking a plus Additional certifications or professional development a plus Experience with arts, tutoring, or other area of specialization a plus Good communication in person, writing, and via technology Relevant training including but not limited to
First Aid/CPR ADA Requirements:
Ability to lift a 50-pound box Ability to walk up and down stairs Ability to sit on the floor with children Ability to provide programs outside during appropriate weather conditions Supervisor(s): TBD, Out-of-School Time Senior Assistant, additional leadership within the assigned classroom
