Job Description

A Thermal Spray Technician in the oil and gas industry applies specialized protective coatings to metal parts and equipment to help prevent wear, corrosion, heat damage, and erosion. These coatings extend the life of expensive components used in drilling, refining, pipelines, pumps, turbines, and production equipment.
Typical duties include:
Preparing metal surfaces by cleaning, grinding, sandblasting, or masking parts Operating thermal spray equipment such as: Plasma spray HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) Arc spray Flame spray Applying coatings made from metals, ceramics, carbides, or alloys Measuring coating thickness and inspecting finished surfaces Reading blueprints, work orders, and coating specifications Maintaining spray guns, booths, and equipment Following safety procedures for heat, compressed gases, dust, and chemicals Recording production and quality data Working with QC inspectors and engineers to meet industry standards In oil and gas, thermal spray coatings are commonly used on: Valves Pump shafts Drilling tools Turbine components Pipelines Compressor parts Offshore equipment Common skills and knowledge: Mechanical aptitude Understanding of metallurgy and coatings Ability to use precision measuring tools Experience with industrial equipment Attention to detail and safety Sometimes welding or machining knowledge Certifications that may help: Thermal spray certifications through ASM International Training from American Welding Society
