Job Title:
Tool and Die Machinist Apprentice Job Description This role offers a hands-on apprenticeship opportunity in a traditional tool room environment, where you will learn the fundamentals of tool and die making under the guidance of experienced professionals. You will support the design, build, repair, and maintenance of precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and molds used in manufacturing operations. The position is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented individual who is eager to develop a skilled trade, enjoys working in a team setting, and is committed to quality and continuous improvement. Responsibilities Assist experienced Tool and Die Makers with the setup, fabrication, assembly, repair, and maintenance of tools and dies used in production. Learn to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, CAD models, and work instructions to support tooling projects. Operate basic manual and CNC equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and saws, under supervision. Perform inspections and verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and indicators. Support tool tryouts and troubleshooting activities to ensure proper fit, function, and performance of tools and dies. Maintain organization, cleanliness, and proper storage of tools, equipment, and work areas to support efficient operations. Follow all safety procedures, plant policies, and quality standards while performing daily tasks. Participate actively in formal apprenticeship training and coursework as required to progress in the program. Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned to support overall manufacturing operations. Essential Skills Strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in learning a skilled trade in tool and die machining. Basic math skills, including the ability to work with measurements, fractions, and decimals accurately. Ability to read basic technical drawings or a clear willingness and ability to learn this skill. Good hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills to perform precise machining and measurement tasks. High attention to detail and a focus on producing accurate, high-quality work. Dependable and punctual work habits, with a strong willingness to learn and follow instructions. Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and stand for extended periods during the shift. Comfort with operating or learning to operate CNC machines, mills, grinders, lathes, and related tooling equipment. Ability to use or learn to use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and indicators. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous exposure to CNC machining, tool and die work, or metalworking (through school, training, or prior employment) is helpful but not required. Experience using basic shop tools and equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and saws is an advantage. Familiarity with tooling, die repair, and general machining processes is beneficial. Willingness to participate in structured apprenticeship coursework and on-the-job training to build long-term skills. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills to collaborate effectively in a tool room and production environment. Why Work Here? The role requires working on the production floor, standing for extended periods, and following established safety procedures and quality standards. The setting is structured, hands-on, and team-oriented, with a focus on maintaining an organized and clean tool room to support efficient and reliable manufacturing operations. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
