Part-time, hourly — approximately 750 hours per yearStaffing Note:
One of three Attendant positions; combined staffing budgeted at approximately 2,250 attendant-hours per year Operating Schedule The Transfer Station Attendant works a schedule that aligns with the facility's public operating hours. Attendants arrive before opening and remain after closing to complete cleanup and securing duties. Day Hours Wednesday (Mid-April - Columbus Day) 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturday (year-round) 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Sunday (year-round) 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Wednesday hours are seasonal and run from mid-April through Columbus Day. Saturday and Sunday hours are year-round. Schedules are set by the Transfer Station Manager and may be adjusted for weather, holidays, and special collection events. Position Summary Under the direct supervision of the Transfer Station Manager, the Attendant is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Mount Vernon Transfer Station and recycling area. The Attendant greets residents, verifies eligibility, directs the proper disposal and sorting of materials, collects applicable fees, and maintains a safe, clean, and orderly facility. The position is highly public-facing and requires courteous, professional interaction with the community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Greet residents at the gate; verify Mount Vernon residency stickers, permits, or proof of eligibility. Collect cash or coupon payments for bulky waste, construction debris, tires, appliances, and other fee-based items; record transactions accurately. Inspect incoming loads for prohibited or hazardous materials; refuse unacceptable loads in accordance with facility policy. Direct traffic and instruct users on where to deposit refuse, recyclables, yard waste, scrap metal, electronics, and household hazardous waste. Sort, consolidate, and load recyclable materials; operate the compactor, baler, and other facility equipment after training and authorization. Move full containers, sweep tipping floors, and keep all disposal areas, walkways, and the surrounding grounds clean and free of litter. Perform routine inspections of equipment and containers; report mechanical issues, safety hazards, or vandalism to the Manager promptly. Assist with snow removal, sanding, and de-icing on the site during winter operations. Provide accurate information to the public regarding recycling rules, disposal options, hours, and fees. Maintain logbooks, daily tonnage sheets, and other records as directed. Follow all federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations, including those of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Open and secure the facility at the start and end of each shift. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Maine driver's license in good standing. Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic for fee collection and recordkeeping. Strong customer service skills and the ability to remain courteous under pressure. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently with limited supervision. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience at a transfer station, landfill, recycling center, or in a public-facing municipal role. Experience operating a front-end loader, skid steer, compactor, or baler. Familiarity with Maine DEP solid waste and recycling regulations. Current first aid and CPR certification. Physical Demands and Work Environment Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and reach for extended periods. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 75 pounds occasionally with assistance. Exposure to dust, fumes, odors, noise, moving equipment, and household waste materials is expected. Required to wear personal protective equipment including high-visibility vest, gloves, safety footwear, and eye and hearing protection. Compensation and Benefits Hourly rate commensurate with experience and set in accordance with the Town of Mount Vernon pay schedule as approved by the Select Board. This position is eligible to participate in the Town's 457(b) deferred compensation retirement plan. The Town matches employee contributions up to 4% of eligible wages. Employer matching contributions vest at 25% per year over four years, becoming fully vested after the employee's fourth year of service. Employee contributions are 100% vested at all times.
