Job Description
Overview Join our dedicated transportation team as a School Bus Driver - Special Education, where your role is vital in ensuring safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation for students with special needs in San Jose California. Must have A valid California Class B CDL Passenger endorsement California School Bus Driver Certificate As a key member of our team, you will operate school buses with professionalism, adhere to traffic laws and transportation safety regulations, and provide exceptional support to students requiring specialized assistance. Your energetic approach and commitment to safety will help foster a welcoming environment for all passengers. Duties Safely operate school buses, including paratransit vehicles, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations. Assist students with disabilities by providing wheelchair assistance and supporting their mobility needs during boarding, riding, and disembarking. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and emergency stop procedures, to ensure passenger safety at all times. Maintain clear communication with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using effective verbal and written skills; be multilingual or bilingual skills are a plus. Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to identify maintenance issues or safety concerns before each route. Manage student behavior through positive behavior management techniques while ensuring a respectful and disciplined environment onboard. Respond quickly to traffic changes or unforeseen circumstances by adjusting routes or schedules promptly to ensure timely arrivals. Complete detailed logs, incident reports, and shift documentation accurately and promptly. Uphold school policies related to student discipline, passenger safety, and vehicle operation throughout your shifts. Support senior care or other specialized passenger needs as required by the role. Experience Proven experience driving commercial vehicles such as school buses or transit buses; paratransit experience is highly valued. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and state/local commercial driving laws applicable to school bus operation. Experience working with children or individuals with special needs; familiarity with behavior management strategies is preferred. Valid commercial driver's license Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements for school bus driving; certification in first aid (including CPR) is required. Demonstrated ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting students or handling equipment safely. Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities such as bilingualism are advantageous for serving diverse communities. Ability to respond quickly during emergencies or unexpected traffic situations while maintaining composure and professionalism. Knowledge of student discipline policies and the ability to foster a respectful environment onboard the bus.
