Full Job Description Qualifications:
Applicants must be 21 or older and have had a valid license for the last 3 years. Applicants must have fewer than 2 moving violations in the last 12 months Applicants must be able to bend at the waist or do deep squats. Applicants must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement and Illinois School Bus Permit. Applicants must be able to complete pre-trip inspection reports, count and mileage reports, and student referral documents. Applicants must have strong student management skills, allowing them to work with large groups of students.
Hours:
Split shift morning and afternoon. Guaranteed 5 hours per day and eligible for trips after a 45 workday probation period.
Probation:
The probation evaluation reviews attendance, accidents, and complaints.
Wages:
Training and entry level driving rate is $22.57/hr. for the 2026-2027 School Year. Applicants with CDL experience may be credited for up to 5 years on the salary schedule for that experience. JTHS will determine the appropriate salary schedule step after a review of credentials. This credit will be applied after the official school board hiring date.
Perfect Attendance Bonus:
In addition to the hourly pay rate, a bonus of $95 per week will be paid for perfect attendance.
Benefits:
All benefits will begin after your official hiring by the school board. 14 paid holidays; 12 paid sick days; IMRF Pension participation; life insurance ($20,000); medical, vision, and dental insurance on a cost share basis (60% District, 40% Employee) All holidays and sick leave is prorated depending on date of hire.
Training:
Training is provided free of charge. The school district will provide a free tutor to assist with passing the 3 written exams needed to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit, CLP. Applicants will not be paid for tutoring sessions. Applicants must attend an 8-hour state-mandated class. The district will pay the class fees, but the applicant will not be paid to attend. Once an applicant has obtained a CLP, they will begin training behind the wheel of the bus. Hours spent training behind the wheel will be recorded. Drivers will be back paid for the recorded training hours once they have obtained a CDL with School Bus Permit and begin driving routes for the school district. No payment will be authorized if the applicant fails to drive for the school district.
Physicals:
Applicants must complete a pre-employment physical, TB test, and drug screen. Drivers must complete an annual physical and any drug or alcohol tests according to the Code of Federal Regulation and JTHS policies. The School District will pay for these examinations and tests.
Fingerprinting:
State law requires all applicants to be fingerprinted and background checked. Fingerprinting will take place at the district administration center. The school district will not employ anyone with a disqualifying conviction. Applicants will also be subject to a "Faith's Law" background check.
License:
For this position applicants are required to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License and Illinois School Bus Permit. The district will pay all fees for testing and renewal of these items.
Driver Performance Responsibilities:
1. Monitor and support District 204, Transportation Department, State of Illinois, and Federal Regulations, policies, and laws concerning students, personnel, vehicles, and transportation. Observe all rules of the road and adhere to posted speed limits. 2. Maintain control of students and report behavior concerns with proper documentation. 3. Report vehicular accidents, student injuries, and on the job injuries immediately. 4. Promote and support the highest standards of safety for vehicles and students. 5. Follow all route directions and stops. Discuss route changes with dispatchers and receive approval before making any changes to route or pickup locations. 6. Notify transportation before an absence. Must speak with someone in the office when you call off. 7. Work as a team with dispatchers, aides, students, parents, and school representatives. 8. Attend training and in-services 9. Maintain professional standards and ethics. Avoid using derogatory, foul, or unacceptable language or gestures. Encourages a positive educational environment by promoting and adhering to the staff and student attire (dress) codes and rules of conduct. 10. Maintain confidentiality concerning students. 11. Assist with loading and unloading special education students 12. Operate wheelchair ramps and secure wheelchairs with proper restraints. 13. Complete physicals, drug and alcohol tests as required. 14. Renew Driver's license and permits on a timely basis. 15. Complete require count sheets and mileage reports 16. Ability to use communication systems such as radios, cell phone, and GPS systems. 17. Ability to drive a variety of vehicles. 18. Ability to accept altered work schedules due to schedule changes at the schools. 19. Ability to monitor time and maintain a timely schedule. 20. Provide medical attention to students and staff as needed. 21. Clean the interion of the bus and exterior windows as needed for safety. 22. Complete a thorough pre-trip inspection including the engine compartment and provide a written report of the inspection before driving the vehicle. 23. Fuels vehicle prior to leaving on routes and trips. 24. Be prepared to conduct an emergency evacuation of the vehicle assigned to you. 25. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
