Duties Safely operate school buses and transit vehicles to transport students from school to designated locations, ensuring adherence to traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Assist students with boarding and exiting the vehicle, including providing wheelchair assistance and managing behavior to maintain a positive environment. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid when necessary, to ensure passenger safety at all times. Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using clear English or bilingual communication skills to coordinate routes and respond quickly to traffic changes. Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure mechanical safety, report any issues promptly, and perform heavy lifting tasks as required for vehicle maintenance checks. Maintain accurate logs of routes, passenger counts, incidents, and vehicle condition reports in compliance with state and local laws. Enforce student discipline policies with tact and professionalism while fostering a respectful atmosphere onboard. Qualifications Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus or transit vehicle operation. Proven experience driving school buses or transit vehicles; familiarity with paratransit services is a plus. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures related to transportation. Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are advantageous for engaging diverse communities. Experience working with children or in childcare settings; ability to manage student behavior effectively. Certification in first aid and CPR; knowledge of emergency stop procedures is preferred. Ability to lift heavy objects safely; mechanical knowledge beneficial for vehicle inspections. Demonstrated understanding of child discipline strategies and behavior management techniques.
