Description:

• A School Bus/Van Driver to join our team and ensure the safe transportation of our students.

Qualifications:

• A valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License CDL with S&P Endorsements (School Bus, Passenger & Air Brake), along with all other requirements to drive a van or bus is preferred, but training will be provided to earn CDL while first employed.
• Or willing to be trained to pass Chauffeur Endorsement AND Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with S&P Endorsements (School Bus, Passenger & Air Brake), along with all other requirements to drive a bus. APS will provide training to new employee drivers to obtain the previously listed license requirements.
• Safe driving record.
• Ability to read and interpret a map, establish, and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on the school bus, and accept/relate to students with a variety of exceptional needs.
• Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school bus.
• Remain calm in an emergency situation.
• Knowledge of the proper application of first aid practices and procedures.
• Recognize mechanical safety hazards in the bus.
• Learn to designate orders of pickup and drop off, modify bus routes, and prepare related reports.
• Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties safely and effectively.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
• Meet all requirements of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Michigan State Police, including: Criminal background check; Physical examination meeting FMCSA and Michigan standards; and Drug and alcohol testing compliance.

Essential Job Functions:

• Drives a school bus safely in accordance with time schedules; transporting students to and from their homes, a variety of school sites, and on field trips as assigned.
• Oversees the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals; assures that safety belts are fastened.
• Maintains order and proper discipline of passengers, resolves disputes, and documents, and reports severe disciplinary cases.
• Conducts established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily: assures maintenance of bus in safe and clean operating conditions: reports needed mechanical repairs, installs special safety belts, sweeps interior of the bus, and washes windows daily.
• Monitors students with special health problems while on the bus: receives written or oral instructions, is aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administers first aid, and calls for emergency assistance if needed.
• Maintains a variety of records and reports including but not limited to mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules.
• Attends meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned.
• Maintains current required licenses and certificates.
• Notifies appropriate individuals of any delays in scheduled routes.
• Assists with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur as assigned.
• Remove all trash and personal items from the bus at the conclusion of each route or trip.
• weep the bus interior as needed to maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
• Wipe down the driver area when necessary.
• Report vandalism, damage, or excessive messes to transportation supervision promptly.
• Ensure the bus is fueled to at least the level which it was received before returning it to the lot.
• Secure the bus according to department procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Non-Compliance:

These expectations apply to regular, substitute, and trip drivers. Failure to return a bus in acceptable condition may result in corrective action in accordance with department policy, district procedures, and the collective bargaining agreement.
