Job Description

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
Drive school bus to transport students over specified routes according to time schedule while staying in compliance with traffic regulations and compliance with the state and local code governing conduct when transporting students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Obeys all federal, state, and local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes and transportation operation guidelines. Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses. This includes clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency. Maintains safe driver standards and applicable physical and dexterity standards. Maintain knowledge of assigned bus routes and students assigned to the bus. Supervises students and maintains discipline while transporting them; complies with discipline policies set forth in the school Code of Conduct. Loads and unloads bus, may assist younger children in getting from loading area to school entrance. Ensures children remain in seats while bus is in operation. Exercises responsible leadership when on school field trips (in or out of district) Reports all accidents and participates/meets all post-accident drug testing requirements. Performs pre and post inspection activities to include, but not limited to - mechanical defects, adequate fuel levels, items left on the bus, vandalism to the bus interior, and to ensure all students have exited the vehicle by the end of the route. Participates in onsite training. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus. Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations. Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses. General knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions. Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department Operating Instructions. Must possess an acceptable driving record as outlined by North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles as legal requirements for issuance of a school bus driver certification Must meet requirements regarding health conditions. Must not have conditions of a criminal nature which would cause disqualification. As the sole adult on a bus, a bus driver must be proficient in the English Language in order to communicate quickly and effectively in situations relating to the safety of students. Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus. Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus. Ability to secure the cooperation of students of all ages and deal sensitively with children with special needs. Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations that may arise which dealing with students with special needs Ability to maintain a clean school bus. Ability to complete required reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations. Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Must have an acceptable driving record as specified by the NC DOT and WS/FCS Must have an acceptable criminal record as specified by
WS/FCS. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Possess and maintain or have the ability to obtain before receiving a bus route, a valid Class B commercial driver's license with a school bus S and passenger P endorsement issued by the NCDMV. Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the NC General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers. Must pass CDL NC State written and practical skills test. First aid certification preferred. Pay Rate is $16.69 per hour.
