Primary Purpose:
Train under the supervision of certified transportation staff to acquire the skills, knowledge, and licensure required to operate a district school bus safely and in compliance with all state and federal regulations. Assist in transportation operations while preparing to assume full bus driving responsibilities upon successful completion of training and certification requirements.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification Clear and valid driver's license Must maintain compliance with all Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations governing CDL issuance and renewal.
Note:
Applicants must meet all current DPS and FMCSA eligibility requirements for the issuance or renewal of a commercial driver's license (CDL), including citizenship, lawful presence, or domicile requirements mandated by state or federal law. Eligibility requirements are subject to change based on regulatory updates. DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate, including a clear drug and alcohol screen (or the ability to obtain the MEC) Experience None required Experience driving a commercial vehicle (preferred) Knowledge and Skills Must be at least 21 years of age Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English Ability to train to operate a school bus within four weeks of the start date Ability to pass required Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examinations and drug and alcohol testing, including annual and random screenings Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to safely operate a school bus and related equipment Ability to manage student behavior and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Key Responsibilities:
Training and Skill Development Participate in district-sponsored CDL training and certification programs to meet all Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements for commercial driver's license (CDL) issuance. Learn and demonstrate safe driving practices by observing, assisting, and practicing under the supervision of a certified bus driver or designated trainer. Learn to operate district school buses according to established schedules, assigned routes, and transportation procedures. Practice and demonstrate proficiency in pre
  • and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicles are safe for operation, reporting mechanical concerns promptly.
Learn and apply proper radio communication procedures for contact with dispatch and other drivers. Attend all required safety meetings, in-service trainings, and professional development sessions. Student and Passenger Supervision Learn and model appropriate methods for managing student behavior on the bus in alignment with district policy and CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) practices. Observe and assist in loading and unloading students safely, including students with special needs who require specialized equipment. Learn to instruct students on safe loading, unloading, and passenger conduct procedures. Practice overseeing them as they board, exit, and cross the street under supervision. Learn to communicate calmly and effectively with students, parents, and staff to promote positive interactions and a safe riding environment. Safety and Compliance Learn to comply with all applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, and district transportation procedures. Observe and assist in emergency preparedness procedures, including bus evacuation drills and first aid protocols. Maintain bus cleanliness and assist with basic upkeep to ensure a safe and sanitary vehicle environment. Learn to complete required documentation, such as mileage logs, inspection reports, and other transportation records, accurately and on time. Identify and report any hazardous conditions or unsafe situations to the supervisor immediately.

Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and expectations as outlined in the employee handbook and administrative regulations. Participate in professional development, faculty/department meetings, and special events as assigned. Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the department and district.

Operate school bus; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher

Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Motion:
Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting:
Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment
Environment:
Work outside and inside with moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold) and weather conditions; moderate exposure to vehicle fumes; work irregular hours as needed.
