Full Job Description Primary Purpose:

Operate school buses and related equipment to provide safe, reliable, and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Coordinate routing of pupil transportation for regular and special needs programs districtwide to ensure safe, timely, and economical transportation services.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or equivalent Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class A or B) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must be 21 years of age Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to follow routes and locate addresses Ability to manage student behavior on buses and follow student discipline procedures Ability to communicate effectively with others Ability to operate bus

Experience:

Two (2) years of previous bus driving experience, preferably in public school transportation

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Layout and schedule all district bus routes in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines. Ensure all changes or additional bus runs are consistent with district policies, guidelines, and procedures. 2. Post route schedules and state required route descriptions. Ensure each bus carries an accurate description of the morning and afternoon route. 3. Assist in driving bus routes as needed following assigned routes and adhering to established schedules. 4. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers and assist as back up dispatcher as needed. 5. Provide daily operational support through field trip coordination, route management, and record keeping to ensure efficient departmental operations and continuity of transportation services. 6. Process requests and arrange for extracurricular transportation. 7. Prepare and update district maps showing areas served by each bus. Distribute maps to schools and to the public as directed. 8. Dispatch drivers and vehicles. 9. Notify drivers, parents, and school personnel of any changes in a student's bus service such as an address change, change in pick-up and drop-off location, change in time or bus change. Help campuses to place new students on buses and advise drivers of new or dismissed students. 10. Drive buses to and from extra curricular activities in cases of emergency. 11. Drive replacement buses in the event of an accident or mechanical breakdown. 12. Evaluate traffic and road conditions for routes. 13. Provide operational support through the movement of vehicles to and from vendors for repair purposes. 14. Pick up vehicle parts from vendors as needed. 15. Observe all duties, responsibilities and safety expectations of a bus driver.

16. Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification. 17. Work irregular hours as needed. 18. Maintain confidentiality and comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education Rule, and Local Board Policy. 19. Demonstrate superior customer service with district staff, students, and community stakeholders. 20. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
