Responsibilities Safely operate buses according to all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations, including school policy knowledge and vehicle codes. Provide excellent customer service by assisting passengers with boarding, alighting, and seating arrangements; including wheelchair assistance and behavior management when necessary. Ensure passenger safety by adhering to emergency stop procedures, emergency response protocols for transportation incidents, and passenger behavior policies. Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle condition, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and safety equipment; report any issues promptly. Maintain clear communication with dispatchers and passengers using effective communication skills; respond quickly to traffic changes or route adjustments. Assist in managing student discipline or passenger conduct issues with professionalism and courtesy. Follow protocols for heavy lifting when loading or unloading equipment or luggage; support senior care needs when applicable. Complete accurate documentation such as shift reports, incident reports, and logs related to vehicle maintenance or passenger incidents. Stay updated on local and state commercial driving laws, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures for transportation. Qualifications Proven experience in bus driving—school bus driving, transit bus operation, or paratransit services preferred. Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for passenger transport; clean driving record required. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations applicable to bus operation. First aid certification and CPR training to respond effectively during emergencies. Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities. Experience working with children or seniors is highly desirable; ability to manage student discipline or senior care needs compassionately. Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary; quick response skills for traffic changes or emergency situations. Familiarity with defensive driving techniques and emergency stop procedures for safe vehicle operation. Excellent behavior management skills coupled with writing skills for accurate record keeping.
