Job Description

Transportation Assistant

Position Purpose

Under the direction of Director of Transportation, transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route, perform regular safety inspections, perform a wide variety of clerical and secretarial work in support of operations and activities related to Transportation, answer telephones and radio calls to assist in smoother operation of transportation office.

Qualification Profile

High School diploma or equivalent

Valid Class "A" or "B" drivers license with PS endorsement or willing to obtain

Ability to pass the U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and physical exam

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate effectively with others

Ability to operate a bus

Essential Job Functions

Operate a two way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication

Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software

Conduct daily safety inspections of buses and white fleet

Operate a bus along a designated route or field trips

Assign/Prepare vehicles for trips

Ensure all vehicles have fuel

Assist in Routing System to ensure all students are routed including developing new routes

Schedule maintenance for all vehicles

Order parts for shop

Perform a wide variety of clerical and secretarial work in support of operations and activities related to transportation, greet and assist visitors

Input a wide variety of data into an assigned computer system

Additional duties

Perform related duties as assigned.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers.

Travel Requirements

Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proper operation of school bus

Applicable radio codes and proper usage of two way radio.

Modern office practices, procedures and equipment

Record-keeping and report preparation techniques

Telephone techniques and etiquette

Operation of computer and assigned software

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazard

Works in standard office and school building environments

Ability to work outdoors

Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions

Evening or variable hours

Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease and gases

Sitting for extended periods of time
