Job Description
About the Position We are seeking a dependable and professional Medical Specimen Courier Driver to join our in-house courier team based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. This position is responsible for the safe, secure, and timely transportation of medical specimens and related materials between physician offices, surgical centers, diagnostic facilities, and our laboratory. The courier plays an important role in supporting laboratory operations and patient care by ensuring that specimens are picked up and delivered accurately and within established timeframes. This is an independent, hands-on position requiring reliability, attention to detail, professional communication, and the ability to follow a structured daily route throughout the Chicagoland area. Key Responsibilities Drive a company-provided vehicle on assigned daily routes throughout the Chicagoland area. Pick up and deliver medical specimens, supplies, documents, and other authorized materials from physician offices, surgical centers, imaging centers, and diagnostic facilities. Follow established procedures for the secure handling and transportation of medical specimens. Maintain accurate pickup, delivery, and route documentation. Complete scheduled pickups and deliveries within established time windows. Communicate promptly with laboratory or dispatch staff regarding traffic delays, facility access issues, route changes, missed pickups, or other concerns. Maintain appropriate chain-of-custody and specimen-handling practices when required. Follow all applicable company safety, confidentiality, and transportation procedures. Perform basic vehicle checks, including fuel level, cleanliness, visible damage, and general vehicle condition. Promptly report maintenance concerns, accidents, vehicle damage, or safety issues. Keep the company vehicle clean and organized. Maintain professionalism and courteous communication with medical office personnel, clients, patients, and coworkers. Assist with additional courier or transportation-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Valid driver's license required. Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company vehicle-insurance requirements. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Must be dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work schedule. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Comfortable driving throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Ability to follow structured routes, schedules, written instructions, and pickup/drop-off procedures. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Professional and courteous communication skills. Basic smartphone proficiency for GPS navigation, route communication, and dispatch updates. Prior courier, delivery, transportation, logistics, or medical courier experience is preferred but not required. Experience working with medical specimens or healthcare facilities is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to enter and exit a vehicle frequently throughout the workday. Ability to walk between parking areas and medical facilities throughout the assigned route. Ability to safely lift and carry courier bags, specimen containers, packages, and supplies associated with the position. Ability to drive for extended periods and work in varying weather and traffic conditions.
