Elm Hill Marina Job Overview:
As a key member of the marina team, the Harbormaster, reporting to the General Manager, is responsible for overseeing day-to-day dock and harbor operations at Elm Hill Marina on Percy Priest Lake. The role prioritizes maintaining high standards of safety, service, and organization on the water and throughout the docks. The Harbormaster is instrumental in managing slip holder relations, coordinating boat traffic, overseeing the maintenance department and boat rental operations, supervising dock staff, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for slip holders, renters, and visitors. The position calls for an experienced, hands-on marine professional who takes pride in a well-run marina and shares Sun Life Marinas' commitment to exceptional boating experiences.
Responsibilities:
Harbor and Dock Operations:
Oversee daily dock activity, boat traffic, and harbor safety. Assist with docking, launching, and retrieving vessels, and support fuel dock and pump-out operations as needed.
Slip Management:
Manage annual, seasonal, and transient slip assignments and overnight moorings. Maintain accurate slip records, agreements, and waitlists in coordination with the Marina General Manager.
Boat Rental Operations:
Oversee daily boat rental operations for pontoons, ski boats, and fishing boats, including reservations, check-in, and check-out. Ensure renters receive clear safety and operating orientations before departure. Inspect rental boats before and after each rental, and ensure the fleet is clean, fueled, maintained, and ready for customers. Track rental fleet condition, damage reports, and maintenance needs in coordination with the maintenance department.
Maintenance Department Oversight:
Oversee the maintenance department, including scheduling, task assignments, and quality of work. Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules for docks, facilities, utilities, and marina equipment. Conduct regular inspections of docks, walkways, utilities, and safety equipment, and ensure repairs are completed promptly and meet safety standards. Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors on repairs and projects as needed.
Team Supervision:
Train, schedule, and supervise dock, maintenance, and boat rental staff, including fuel dock and rental attendants. Set clear expectations and provide coaching to foster a positive, safety-focused team.
Customer Service Excellence:
Serve as a primary point of contact for slip holders, renters, and boaters, delivering friendly, professional service. Address customer inquiries, concerns, and dock-related issues promptly.
Safety and Emergency Response:
Enforce marina rules and safe boating practices on the docks and in the harbor. Respond to on-water incidents and emergencies, coordinating with TWRA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local emergency services as needed. Prepare docks and vessels for severe weather and seasonal changes.
Regulatory Compliance and Environmental Stewardship:
Ensure dock, fuel, and rental operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Support clean marina practices, including proper fuel handling, spill prevention, and waste management.
Recordkeeping and Reporting:
Maintain logs for incidents, inspections, fuel, maintenance, rentals, and slip activity. Provide regular updates to the Marina General Manager on harbor, maintenance, and rental operations and areas for improvement. Perform additional tasks and fulfill responsibilities as assigned, recognizing that this list is not exhaustive and may not encompass all the duties required for the role.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in marina, dock, or marine operations; supervisory experience preferred. Strong boat handling skills across a variety of vessels, including pontoons. Working knowledge of marine engines, boat systems, and general facility maintenance; experience managing a rental fleet is a plus. Knowledge of boating safety, marina operations, and applicable regulations. Boating safety certification and CPR/First Aid certification preferred, or the ability to obtain them. Strong communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills. Availability for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts is essential to meet the operational needs of the marina.
Physical Requirements:
The Harbormaster position involves a range of physical activities essential to the effective operation of the harbor and docks.
They should be able to:
Lift and Carry:
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment, lines, or supplies.
Mobility:
Stand, walk, and navigate docks for extended periods, including climbing ladders and stairs and moving in and around boats.
Boat Operation:
Safely operate and maneuver vessels in varying conditions.
Manual Dexterity:
Handle lines, cleats, fuel nozzles, tools, and equipment.
Visual Acuity:
Monitor harbor activity, assess dock and equipment conditions, and read documents and screens, with or without corrective lenses.
Hearing:
Communicate effectively in person, by phone, and by radio, and respond to alarms or other auditory signals.
Working Outside:
Work outdoors in heat, cold, and inclement weather, with exposure to sun, wind, precipitation, and water.
