A Sailor, Deckhand, or Marine Oiler operates boats and equipment on boats and manages sails on sailboats. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks on boats and cargo vessels, including hauling goods, operating equipment, or cleaning the boat. Lubricates parts of marine equipment to maintain boat engines and auxiliary equipment.
The Deckhand and Deckhand/Cook stand proper watches and execute duties vital to the general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of vessel equipment and deck department operations. Accountable directly to the Master or Mate, the role requires executing operational tow duties, maintaining clean and safe vessel facilities, preparing daily crew meals (for Deckhand/Cook roles), and maintaining active safety vigilance across all assigned watches. The duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Operational Duties :
Making / breaking the tow; Securing, dropping, spotting, and switching barges at docks; Assisting the vessel and tow in making locks; Standing lookout, or riding the head of the tow as a lookout; and, Performing the various tasks necessary to carry out the above, such as operating winches and capstans, and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines. Maintenance Duties - Deckhand Chipping and painting vessel. Perform general sanitary cleaning of work-crew areas, heads and showers, and galley. Dump refuse buckets regularly, and sweep and mop work-crew areas. Clean windows and port lights as necessary. Other equipment maintenance as needed. Housekeeping Duties - Deckhand and Deckhand/Cook Scouring the vessel; Cleaning your personal quarters; Cleaning the wheelhouse and galley; Cleaning the heads and companionways; Maintaining the vessel, grease winches, dogs on hatch covers, etc.; Performing other cleaning chores as directed by the Master. Prepare meals daily for crews of 6 for the duration of your voyage Safety Duties Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Master or Mate on watch, exercising the 'stop work' authority as necessary and making corrections when capable. Other duties as directed by the Master or Mate.
