The ideal candidate will hold a valid USCG Master of Towing Vessels credential for Great Lakes/Inland and/or Near Coastal waters and have hands-on experience operating tugboats and handling barges in a marine construction environment. Responsibilities Safely operate and navigate tugboats while towing, pushing, maneuvering, and positioning barges and marine equipment. Perform towing operations in accordance with USCG regulations and company safety procedures. Maneuver barges during dredging, marine construction, mobilization, and demobilization activities. Conduct pre-departure and routine vessel inspections and ensure the vessel is maintained in a safe and seaworthy condition. Monitor weather, water conditions, vessel traffic, navigation hazards, and other conditions affecting safe operations. Maintain required vessel logs, records, and documentation. Coordinate with deckhands, dredge crews, crane operators, project supervisors, and other vessels during operations. Ensure proper handling of towing gear, lines, winches, anchors, and related deck equipment. Identify and report mechanical, safety, or maintenance issues and assist with routine vessel maintenance as needed. Maintain compliance with applicable USCG regulations and company policies. Serve as the person in charge of the vessel and crew while underway. Qualifications Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Master of Towing Vessels endorsement - Great Lakes/Inland and/or Near Coastal required. Valid TWIC card. Current USCG medical certification. Demonstrated tugboat and towing experience. Experience maneuvering and positioning barges preferred. Knowledge of Great Lakes and inland waterway operations preferred. Strong understanding of navigation, towing procedures, marine safety, and USCG requirements. Ability to safely lead and direct a vessel crew. Must be able to pass applicable pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing requirements. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Schedule & Travel This position requires travel to marine construction projects throughout the Great Lakes region. Candidates must be comfortable working extended rotations away from home and aboard vessels as project schedules require. Work schedules may include long days, weekends, nights, and extended periods away from home depending on project requirements, weather, and marine conditions. Physical Requirements Candidates must be able to work safely in a marine construction environment, including climbing ladders, handling lines and equipment, working on moving vessels and barges, and working outdoors in varying weather and water conditions.
