ABOUT THE ROLE
New Hope & Ivyland Railroad is hiring Rail Bike Operators for the launch of The Rail Bike Experience — a fleet of four-person pedal-assist rail bikes operating on a scenic historic rail corridor in Bucks County, PA. Each tour group is staffed by three operators working as a unit: one Lead Rail Bike Operator in a safety-sensitive role, and two Rail Bike Operators in guest-facing support roles. We are hiring for both positions and welcome applicants at either level.
POSITIONS
Lead Rail Bike Operator — Safety-Sensitive | $20-22.00/hour The Lead Operator commands each tour group. This position carries operational authority over rail bike movement, radio communications, switch operations, and emergency response. It is designated safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random Drug & Alcohol testing under NHRR's operating standards. Rail Bike Operator — Guest Services | $18-20.00/hour Rail Bike Operators work alongside the Lead on every tour. This is a guest-facing role centered on safety briefings, boarding assistance, and the quality of the guest experience. This position is not safety-sensitive and is not subject to Drug & Alcohol testing requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
ALL OPERATORS
Prepare rail bikes for each tour: seat configuration, battery check, clutch and brake inspection Deliver clear, engaging guest safety briefings prior to departure Escort groups on the rail bike route and respond to guest needs throughout Assist guests on and off the bikes, including those with limited mobility Reset bikes after each tour for the next group Report equipment issues or guest incidents to the Experience Manager immediately Represent New Hope & Ivyland Railroad with professionalism and enthusiasm
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
LEAD OPERATOR ONLY
Direct all rail bike movement on the corridor Conduct pre-tour job briefings with the operator team Execute radio communications under NHRR operating rules Operate hand-thrown switches Lead emergency response if required
REQUIREMENTS
ALL APPLICANTS
Customer service experience — tourism, hospitality, recreation, or similar Comfortable outdoors; physically active role (walking, lifting, all weather) Valid driver's license Weekend and holiday availability required Reliable and punctual — tours operate on a fixed schedule Clear verbal communication skills; ability to deliver safety instructions and respond to guest questions
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Pre-employment physical and Drug & Alcohol Screening Enrollment in Random Drug & Alcohol Program Completion of NHRR Rail Bike Operator Certification prior to independent operation
NICE TO HAVE
EITHER POSITION
Experience in outdoor recreation, guided tours, or attractions First Aid / CPR certification
CAREER PATH
Rail Bike Operator → Lead Rail Bike Operator → Rail Bike Experience Manager. Operators who pursue Lead certification and demonstrate sustained performance have a direct path to supervisory and management roles as the department grows.
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
Lead Rail Bike Operator:
$20-22.00/hour |
Rail Bike Operator:
$18-20.00/hour Part-time, seasonal | Operating season: Memorial Day through November | Weekends and holidays required
