Job Summary A Solid Waste Operator manually separates recyclable materials like paper, plastic, metal, and glass from general waste streams at the INSY Solid Waste Facility. Key duties include identifying and removing non-recyclable and hazardous items from mixed waste, operating sorting machinery, maintaining a clean work area, and complying with safety and operational procedures to ensure efficient waste processing and support environmental sustainability. Responsibilities Physically sort paper, plastics, metals, glass, and other items from mixed waste streams. Assist the Solid Waste Driver in daily routes Interacts courteously and professionally with customers and the general public. Tags trash and recycling as necessary to inform customers of proper collection procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Identifies and responds to potential hazards, such as fluid spills or debris, applying safety standards. Identify and remove non-recyclable materials and hazardous waste to maintain the quality of the recyclable stream. Operate machinery, such as balers or compactors, to process and prepare materials. Collect and place sorted materials into designated dumpsters or storage containers. Keep the sorting and processing areas clean and organized. Adhere to safety protocols, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure a safe working environment. Report equipment malfunctions or operational issues to management. Experience Proven experience operating commercial trucks such as front loader, rear loader, or roll-off trucks in a municipal or private waste management setting. Knowledge of traffic laws, DOT regulations, state transportation laws, and hazardous materials regulations relevant to solid waste collection. Familiarity with mechanical knowledge related to garbage trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles for basic troubleshooting. Prior experience with route driving, delivery driving, or similar outdoor work environments is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently during load & unload activities. Strong understanding of safety protocol adherence including defensive driving techniques and hazard awareness.
