Backup Dial-A-Ride Driver Starting Salary:
$75 for a half day and $150 for a full day.
Hours of Work:
per diem/ as needed. 9-4:30pm
Position Purpose:
This class is accountable for driving vehicles to transport passengers to various local points according to a time schedule for the Town's Dial-A-Ride Transportation Program.
Overall Responsibilities Include:
As directed by Senior Center Director, assists with clearing of walkways, setting out of cones. Assists Senior Center as needed to promote a team effort to serve the public; Complies with OSHA regulations; Contacts appropriate staff if there is an accident, injured rider, ill rider, or complaint from rider; Drives town-owned Dial-a-Ride Van or car based on daily schedule of pick-ups; decides routes to take; receives cell phone calls for follow up pick-ups; assists riders into bus and into seat if necessary; secures wheel chair and client in bus/van/vehicle; assists clients with grocery bags; follows safe driving rules; Responsible for inspecting vehicle daily; reporting problems or taking vehicle in for repair and cleaning vehicle daily; Responsible for keeping track of ridership, mileage, fuel; Screens incoming calls to set up appointments for clients, follows through with reminder calls to clients about scheduled appointments or changes in schedule; Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or GED High School Diploma and valid Connecticut driver's license with a Passenger Endorsement (F Endorsement) required; three (3) years of consecutive driving experience when applying for endorsement; 18 years of age or 21 if the vehicle you will be driving is a commercial motor vehicle; have an acceptable driving record; possess good moral character; pass a criminal record background check; must be subject to medical review and meet the physical requirements outlined on the medical examination form as required per 49 CFR 391.41-391.49.
Working Conditions, Physical and Mental Requirements:
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. Incumbents in this class may be exposed to hazardous road conditions. Driving is performed in moderately and loud noisy traffic with regular interruptions via cell phone for pickup assignments; driving is done under possible adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold. Administrative work is performed in a moderately noisy office with regular interruptions during the day from the clients for scheduling via the phone. This position requires the operation of a Mini-Bus, van, vehicle, cellular and other telephones, and radio; copiers, facsimile machines, and other standard office equipment. This position requires frequent and periodic contact with clients/riders, nursing homes, physician offices, families/caregivers, health care facilities, and town staff. Communication is frequently in person, by telephone, or radio. Contacts require a high level of courtesy and patients. Errors in judgment or omissions could result in injury to others, delay in services, and potential liability. A physical examination may be required.
